besides, i doubt the US launch a full-scale war against vietnam then.

if they launch a full-scale war like the one they did on japan during WW II(with atomic bombs), vietnam wouldn't exist today.
also, i don't think the US really lost. the amount of vietnamese soldiers killed is 1.5 times that of the US troops.

USA realized if it didn't pull out the USSR may get involved directly, it was obvious USSR was arming the vietcongs so they had been indirectly involved all along, hence they pulled out. the public outcry, the usa losing to viet congs (what a joke - look at the death toll, it's like 55k for americans to 1-1.5 millions for vietcongs) are all eyewashes.
although it's true certain untoward acts were committed by the american soldiers, rape of civilians, or mass murder, or use of chemical weapons.
so these incidents had somewhat of an effect.
