Microsoft is moving to quash claims that its antispyware tool is now giving preferential treatment to adware maker Claria.
The beta version of Microsoft AntiSpyware previously recommended that users quarantine several products from Claria, but this changed last week.
According to a statement published by Microsoft, the downgrade in threat level merely represents an effort to be "fair and consistent with how Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) handles similar software from other vendors."
The news comes at a sensitive time, as Microsoft is reportedly in acquisition talks with Claria.
The beta version of Microsoft AntiSpyware previously recommended users quarantine several products from Claria (previously known as Gator), but security researchers discovered earlier this month that Redmond had changed those classifications. Users now receive messages to ignore the products.
Previous Next "All software is reviewed under the same objective criteria, detection policies and analysis process," Microsoft said. "Absolutely no exceptions were made for Claria.
"Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) continues to notify our users when Claria software is found on a computer, and it offers our users the option to remove the software if they desire...We firmly believe that people should have complete control over what runs on their computers."

MS antispyware prog does just enough... Its not lousy nor is it exceptionally good.
Personally, I like Spybot S&D for their good control over the registry and free updates.
I like Webroot for its BHO and registry control.
MS and counterspy look the same. I think they even use the same database to update but I'm guessing here.
I wouldn't advise anyone to use the MS antispyware unless I hate that person tho...

[b]It's good. It managed to spot spywares that could not be identified by other anti-spyware programs like spybot, adaware, spy hunter and spy sweeper.
The advance tools feature allows you to secure and customise the list of programs to speed up your start up. It also helps you keep track of the BHO( browser helper options) of your internet browser. This is crucial as many spyware plant themselves on the BHOS.
Furthermore, the beta version includes the tracks eraser that delete tracks of your internet surfing resulting in more internet privacy!
It's good and definitely a useful tool in helping curb the attack of spyware.

Optimise your usage... Minimize on shortcuts, try not to run too many redundant things in the background. Avoid installing different programs that do the same thing. etc.Originally posted by shinta:ah~ but i'm talkin about office pc...
