The amount of money and effort spent to computerise the returning and borrowing process is so much faster compared to the olden days of manual cards. The only complain I have is they replaced the books too fast. Books published abt 10 years ago you can't find them anymore. It seem to be keeping itself very up to date. That maybe not a bad thing afterall?
Furthermore libraries offer free air con and free newspaper to read so a lot of ppl thinking of save money and at the same time increase knowledge libraries the way to go. Some libraries even have cafe inside. -

It is still better than wat some countries who only take and build nothing? Even if build it is a defective building and now waiting to catch the culprits which have long run road already. Our northern neighbor state hospital is a classic example

THe only thing that I liked about the new library was the elevator. It goes up and down so fast it's quite a ride. LOL. Other than that, NOTHING. The books are not THAT interesting and all the other books can't even be loaned. Now there's even books that are not supposed to be read?! Then what the fuck is the purpose of having books?!
For display?! Geez, then I'd rather see them display actual ART in the cases. -
The new NLB is actually called the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library. It is primarily meant to be a Reference Library, not a Lending Library. In a way this library caters to the more "serious" crowd, people who genuinely need information. Thats why the Lending Section is in the Basement. This seperates the more casual and "loud" crowd from thronging the Reference Section.
The reason why NLB went with such a library is because the old Stamford Road Library is simply not big enough to cater to all the books that NLB wishes to put up for reference. At that time, they had a lot of good books and no place to shelve them, in the end most were placed at the closed stacks at Changi. This is not a recent development, the physical shortcomings of the old Stamford building surfaced many years ago. -
why go to the library when u go can go to kinokuniya or borders? more selections of books and can read all u want.

in my school's library they have artifact books such as the original copy of mathematica princip-something something written by issac newton, its secured in a thick glass case with alarm systems wired into it. you think you can read that? -

Of course, there are certain items that are rare and thus unsuitable to be loaned out, or even read by the public, reason being the public simply has no need to read them. If you think you have the need to access these information, you can make an application.

Museums handle artifacts, Archives deal with records. There has been some debate whether certain items should be in NAS or NLB, but that has since been ironed out.

i give you the benefit of doubt that all that hundreds of books on 10th floor are autographed....
but what is the purpose of putting them on 10t floor?
first: i cannot see any signature by peeping through from outside of the glass cubicles. so, i don't appreciate the books.
second: why waste the space? I want to borrow a few books. All were stored in warehouse and i had to 'reserve' them ( costing me SGD1.55)
they should remove the white elephant books and put more books for people to browse through and gain knowledge.
note: i'm not saying that it's not good to display in public but i think the location is damn wrong.. putting it in musuem will be better place. -
