since there are so many threads on christianity, i have decided to start a thread on Buddhism, another religion which has seen many people practising in recent years.
Buddhism is a philosophy of life itself. in fact, more people are beginning to see the wonders of Buddhism, as can see in more people practising Buddhism in many parts of the world.
let this be a venue for people to discuss this religion.

I agree with you on not forcing others to be vegetarian. To put in a Buddhist's perspective, Buddha doesn't force anyone what to eat and what not.

nowadays people get the meaning of buddhism wrong.... they pray at buddha and hope that something will happen.... in actual fact buddhism revolves around life... everyone have a buddha nature in them, it is under various contitions that we can enlighten the buddha nature in we.... The buddha is not a figure of worthship instead is just a person that had understood the truth about life, the buddha like every other people is a human that will age and die... He is not a god or something that we pray to.... instead it is the teachings that were taught by him that will enable one to understand the true meaning of life itself.......

My relative joined this group. Became staunch vegetarian. Forced all of us to stop eating meat. Whenever we eat meat, she gave us one kind of look, like we are all full of lethal poison like that.
Brought my parents to her group meeting, trying to convert them. My mom got so pissed off with what they taught there, cuz it literally distorts the teaching of Buddha.
My mom told me that the leader told them the secret of the Three Treasures and wanted them all (incl my mom) to make some wicked vows not to reveal this secret. The person who broke this vow would be hit by lightning on the head. My mom refused to say the vow as she doesn't believe that Buddha wants ppl to make this kind of vow (this I must agree with her). Then they wanted to register her name to make her a member. They said that by doing so, they can "register a place in heaven" for my mom. My mom so furious that she came back and told me everything she saw.
Some time later, this relative was sent by this group to some faraway country to spread the religion. She has refused to come back since then. She said she has to stay there in order to attain Buddha's blessing for her and her family.
After that, they did something to my family at my place which I shall not elaborate here. All I can say is if they do it one more time, I will have to call mata to catch them and then sue them for harassment liao.
Disclaimer : I totally have no problem with the main stream Buddhist groups. In fact, I respect them and their active role in charities. Only for this particular cult group, I hope everyone be careful of them. -

soka association originated frm japan. has 2 buildings in sg, tampines and jurong. in thailand, those monks not pure vegetarian. if they beg for alms and receive meat, they also have to eat it. sth like ji gong? have buddha in heart can liao?

by the way, of course there are many people who will not agree with what soka is practising or what the belief is. fundamentally, soka follows the lotus sutra. the difference with what soka is practising (nichiren buddhism) and other schools of buddhism is that soka buddhists chant the title of the lotus sutra.

Nichiren asserted that every individual has the potential to become enlightened in his or her present lifetime. Buddhist practice is a vehicle of individual empowerment. Nichiren lived in Japan during a tumultuous time of social unrest and natural disasters. The common people, especially, suffered enormously in this harsh feudal society. After intensive study of the Buddhist sutras, he realized that the essence of the Buddha's enlightenment, and the means to bring an end to suffering and social turmoil, was found in the Lotus Sutra. Based on his study of the sutra he established the invocation of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as a universal practice for tapping and manifesting the life-condition of Buddhahood latent in one's own life. SGI members believe that exerting oneself in both faith and practice--including taking action in reality based on wisdom and compassion--is the means by which one is able to realize one's Buddhahood.
Nichiren strongly believed that the true aim of Buddhism is to enable people living in the real world and facing real problems to become empowered and change their lives and society for the better. Nichiren Buddhism is a philosophy that respects the fundamental dignity of all life and stresses the profound connection between one's own happiness and the happiness of others."

everybody forgot the very origins of buddism, it was founded as a PHILOSOPHY, not a religion but somehow those mainland chinese just had to incorporate taoism into a philosophy and make it into a religion.

Eastern faiths tend to be spiritual and less dogmatic than Western ones.
