OMG...newspaper, financial experts, banking experts, politicians all say the economy is running strong like a bull....and future is promising...
Let me teach you how to read between the lips:
Look promising : this is a standard tactic to make you feel good. U dont know the future.. so you can say anything you like.
Economy is strong : Financial statistic like the shares market index is for the show... Oil price is coming down but next week is going up.
Dont trust those financial experts's assessment. They have a truck load of Vocab to confuse you.
So, what you think? is job market good? what kind of job? -
I think it is still quite bad for local grad rite now despite all those speeches and newspaper or news. One thing I see is employers are employing quite a lot of foreign talents to do certain jobs at a cheaper rate. This is usually becuz sporeans shun to do those kind of jobs.
We can categorise job as doing job that sweat a lot or doing job that burn your brain a lot. Sweat a lot could be go inside those big ship tankers to do repairing. Burn a lot could be IT programming.
One way to make oneself marketable and attractive to employers is to be able to do what those foreign talent can do and much more. This is to justify the pay packet.
Example for IT line (I am in for 7+ yrs), it is no longer the case where you propose to boss to get vendor help and you just be liaison officer. The model is outdated cuz some boss want in-house staff to do it or at least maintain the system after the vendor left. Vendor quote exorbitant pricing and like held customer ransom cuz customer are now totally dependent on the vendor system. Maintenance contract can be very very expensive.
For this case, if an in-house personel can do the maintainence which include making code changes to vendor system, he is retainable cuz afterall he only cost a fraction of what the vendor demand.
Conclusion: the job market is quite different from last times especially with a lot of FT fighting with you for that slice of the pie. You gotta be better than them to survive. -
Market stil sucks. once my contract ends i am goign to be jobless again.

Another gold tap case. Honestly, I think good pay brings about good performance. I'm all for one to rewards good results with good money. But the economy now.. Pls, it's not good at all.
Here's layman's understanding of whether got good job market: If got more taxis waiting at taxi stand than people for most taxi stands, you know it's recession.

the economy is good only in certain sectors. china and india is booming. things are going well in those regions. our govt and businessmen invested a lot. these people are making money, but how does it benefit us. pharmaceutical and certain other fields are booming too, again only those in these area stand to gain.
many people are not doing well. -
I think most jobs nowadays are contract-based. One year or at most three years from what I saw as I browsed through online classifieds.
This is jialat man....I feel my future is a dark, dark world.

if your contract happens to end on or around a recession you are dead meat. no job and no compensation. it will be even worst if you are old by then. -

Those in the IT industry suffer the most. Large corporations continue to outsource IT work to contract staff or companies working on contract basis. They retain only a handful to manage the daily needs of their server.
I have a friend who has been working contract for 5 years now. Every now and then, he gets recommended to another company for his value-added work and that's really how he manages to stay in his market. -
Local Grads, join government sector & peg ur salary high so wont go below next time. Economy is very uncertain now......... it's like a never ending recession

At such uncertain times, ministers should be contended with much lower pay. That is, until they've shown that they deserve that huge amount they are drawing from the people.
