That's the most sane reply I have read so far. Indeed while the local chinese roots may have originated from China, we have diversified in our own way over the generations here. When one talks about Chinese, instantly many non-Chinese foreigners will think about PRC Chinese.
Afterall, that is where our local ancestors came from, and PRC is where there are the most numbers of the Chinese race.
After many generations, we being to develop our own characteristics, our own culture, and abandoning the traditional traditions and culture.
For example, the way our vocal cord generates our voices. From our unique voices, others can tell that we are not the present-day PRC Chinese man. From the way we speak, the way we string our sentences, may also set us aside from them.
But why care? We still have the same ancestors. We are still, unified under the generalised term "Chinese". However, as PRC enjoys its economic boom, a minority (or a majority? I have not visited PRC) of PRC Chinese begin to look down upon and despise us.
I think that that prompted this widespread "racism" -- it is common nowadays to see that most local Chinese do not mix with PRC Chinese... -
This will then be a chicken and egg situation? We are ostricising the PRC chinese for their presence here and stealing our jobs. Or they are looking down on us just because they are riding the economic wave?

Consequences: Local companies edged out China companies. Jobs are lost and created at the same time.

I have been around PRCs for 2 years now.
Most of them are warm enough, nationalistic and stick to their own group.
But do not kid me, because one of the PRCs I know actually have a better command of English than most Singaporeans. Shameful.
