This new chapter in Singapore's sports history comes not from foreign talents, not from training overseas, not from the funded core sports or merit sports. It comes not from a group with theoretically-correct systems.
It comes from an entirely local team which trained in Bishan Sports Hall. It was considered an 'other' sports classified by the Singapore Sports Council.
It comes from a sport which was delisted by the Singapore National Olympic Council and the Singapore Sports Council in 2001. So what is behind its success? Support from Team Singapore.
The supporters came from the Ministry of Education, which has gymnastics as a sport with all-year-round combined school training since 1999. From the schools for releasing their students to train.
From the Major Games Preparation Committee formed by the Singapore Sports Council in 2001 and 2003. From the hard-working coaches who were not affected by the never-ending paperwork and changes.
From the loyal family members who fetched the gymnasts for training, gave them a shoulder to cry on when they get injured.
From the media which cheered and supported the team all year. And from the passionate volunteers who always suggest ways to improve performance.
All this proves one thing: Team Singapore can do it!
Just like Singapore in the Sars crisis, gymnastics risked being wiped out. But the association did not sit around and have its pity-party. Instead it tried its best even if things were not perfect.
All the stakeholders stuck together for the sake of the country. The worst nightmare for gymnastics in 2001 has been transformed into the sweetest dream it ever had.

These are the type of Singaporeans we want.
BUt alas, since this is gymnastics, I can foresee that soon they will be importing FTs to join the gym team soon in order to boost the sport and increase our medal tally in future games.
Just give it a few more years. -

This team is truely Singapore.
They have done themselves proud without the support and funding of the sporting council.
Unlike the other team, the soccer team, was supported and funded and advertised on TV.
A total DISGRACE !!!
The medal belongs to them and all their family and friends.
I guess the writer wanted to highlight the gruesome journey that the Singapore Gym Team Ladies have taken to achieve their dreams.
This prevents some glory seekers from claiming the unnecessary credit when the gym team returns.
I salute the lady writer from sharing the truth with Singapore and ST for publishing.
This GYM team from Singapore deserves total respect from every singaporeans. -

Everyone was great,
they were the epitome of sportmanship and professionalism,
just look at Nicole Tay,
for those who have seen her during the worst day of her games,
dont you agree you feel so proud to be sporean,
seeing her battling her fears out,
hold on to the very end,
yet come back and secure the gold medal with sheer determination.
