Need in windows

I recently changed my OS from win 98 to win 2000. The prob is i did not do clean install. There is a lot of junk now. But i cant afford to do clean install
So the prob now is how do i uninstall the programs which worked in 98 ( cant see them in the Uninstall options)
and did not work in 2000
In other words *PURGE old Remnants* of the past OS.
HOW DO IT? -
reformat? reformat using the 2k disk

What do you mean by can't afford? No time or no money?
Because I feel that you really need a clean install to solve your problems. -

What program you need so urgently until you don't want to do a clean install? Microsoft Office? Programs are hard to back up, because the registry is involved. Unless you know how to back up your registry and copy the old registry to the new OS, I doubt it is impossible. I myself don't know how to do that. -
You cannot make them show up.
When a program is installed, the Installer writes a Registry value in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall with the values of the Name, Uninstall Path and Icon.
When you upgrade, Windows 2000 apparently overwrites the whole Registry's Uninstall section.
Therefore -- you have to hunt around your Program Files, uninstallin the unneeded programs... -

But how come they are still inside your computer? Usually these files will disappear when you install new OS. -
1. Use the program's own Uninstaller. Normally in the Program Files folder, in each Program's folder there will be a unwise.exe or uninstall.exe or some sort of uninstaller. If there is, good, you can remove it by running the Uninstaller.
2. Use Norton CleanSweep (or some other free Uninstaller program, I do not know). It can analyze the program EXE and determine which other files the program uses, and remove it for you. -

For example, you install Program A in Win98. When you upgrade, Program A in the "program files" folder remains, but DLL it uses may be removed/replaced in the upgrade process, so Program A cannot run, cannot be removed via the Add/Remove Proggy interface. -

Probably something went wrong during the installation. -

Without the Registry keys, the Add/Remove programs will not show the Program on its list. -

Program A's files is in C:\Program Files
Registry is in C:\Windows\System32 (let's say)
When you upgrade, C:\Windows is overwritten, some useless WIN98 files are left behind. However Windows installation does not touch C:\Program Files.
So, without the registry, (which stores the list of programs installed), Windows does not even know that Program A exists! -

U see the newer programs are still working .things are fine. browser is working. Everything is intact. Passwords bookmarks files ect.
But the bloody uninstall programs is screwed. The only problem now. -
as u see as mine is fairly old comp around 1 gig, i dont intend to use XP, win2000 does not use as much resources as XP
i am a casual user and i only do occasional stuff like multimedia editing ect.
And i dont like teh navigation and "bloated" feel of XP -
it is better to use old OS with old hardware. plus the performance increase i will get from win2000 will be greater than XP

i dun know what it means by changing os from win98 to win2k. is it an upgrade or clean install of win2k?
clean install of 2k will wipe out all the pograms and files in the same drive partition. if you do a clean install of 2k over win98 i am suprised that you can even see programs installed back in your win98 days in the hdd
you should have partition it, transfer important files from win98 partition to new installed win2k partition before wiping win98k partition away from your hdd.
unless its an upgrade from win98 to 2k...when any programs you have that is also (usually) supported by tthe newer win2k OS should work. clean install of OS ... no ... correct me if some experts know otherwise...the answer is all files and programs shall be formated pprior to OS install -
format all ar rahman songs , and bollywood movies , to increase your disk space
