I did upgrade not clean install. And OS installation when u boot from CD ask u if u want to wipe put and do clean install OR just Upgrade only. clean install of 2k will wipe out all the pograms and files in the same drive partition. if you do a clean install of 2k over win98 i am suprised that you can even see programs installed back in your win98 days in the hdd
you should have partition it, transfer important files from win98 partition to new installed win2k partition before wiping win98k partition away from your hdd.
unless its an upgrade from win98 to 2k...when any programs you have that is also (usually) supported by tthe newer win2k OS should work. clean install of OS ... no ... correct me if some experts know otherwise...the answer is all files and programs shall be formated pprior to OS install

if your pc used to run on win98...u get a full version win2k disc...i dun think you can just install over win 98 and hope to keep your files...can u? please feed me on this info coz i never upgrade in my life with computers...i do clean installation ALWAYS if u intend to upgrade over your win98...u have to get an UPGRADE disc for win2k where during installation it will search for vaild components in your hdd windows partition before it will validate the upgrade -
Come on man..Any Windows user knows it has a Registry system that swings its moods like a girl with PMS.
Even a application install or uninstall gone wrong causes tonnes of redundant registry keys blah blah blah...
You did a upgrade from win98 to win2k. Ok i dunno why Windows put in the Upgrade choice in the first place when they already warn that applications installed on win98 MIGHT not work on win2k. Theres no full compatibility here.
I really suggest that INSTEAD of finding a way to clean up the mess, you find a way to back up your files, get the applications you need from your friends maybe ? (how many softwares can you need? i dont think its alot eh), and do a clean install.
And another thing. For a 1gig pc i would definetly install WinXP. Solves the hassle of installing drivers blah blah.If your RAM is low then just set it to use the classic theme.I even installed WinXP on a 233MHz pc with 256MB ram.
So yeah.thats it. Clean install is really a more convenient choice. Even if it doesnt seem convenient now, in the long run it will. -

I think many of u are confused. I never reformat my Hard dsk when the installation asked me if i wan to do a clean install (means wipe out everything and install on empty HDD). Can u remember the options screen where u can choose which type of installation u want to do, I just chose "leave the system as it is" and upgrade. It will just overwrite the Win98 OS. Then your other files like songs, videos, programs , games are still intact. This is the meaning of Upgrade -

The problem is that if you upgrade, leftover ununsed Registry entries (except for WINDOWS' registry entries) for unworking programs remains, and uninstallers specifically programmed for Win98 will not work in Windows 2000 because Win2000 uses the newer WinNT Windows Kernel and API system. (Same as now, when Vista arrives, probably the programs I made will not work there)
In this case you have to
* Manually remove program files from your C:\Program Files, but Registry entries remain and clutter up (registry hives are huge, takes up a lot of space and fragments easily, bringing performance down)
* Use a program cleaner like Norton CleanSweep, which can remove DLLs, Registry entries easily;
* Do a clean install to clear all useless not-working program files.
You can backup Firefox passwords, bookmarks. You can backup MSN MESSENGER contacts. You can backup your Windows Media Player playlist.
Lesser files in your system represents better performace. Since your Win2000 CD is a FULL VERSION, it is best you clean install.
Feel free to ask more. -

Now Win 2K also dont need to install separate drivers for hardware i think? I just connected my thumbdrive and it installed instantly. The thumbdrive is fairly new. I think Win2K SP4 has some new features , correct? -

thumbdrives shouldnt be much of a problem.
I once had a BIG problem with my HP printer on Win2k. The system will hang the MOMENT it starts up and a particular process related to HP's printer driver for Win2k will use up 100% CPU and you wont be able to do anything.
Even HP didnt release a fix for the damn bug. This is just one of the many annoyances that makes me love my Win XP cd that i got for $10 YEARS back.. ha ha! -

Win2000 --> WinXP
Win95 --> Win98
Win98 uses a different OS core, System Kernal and Windows API from Windows 2000, which is based on the NT Kernel and API.
Windows 2000, NT and XP and upcoming Vista are based on Windows NT Core. Windows 95, 98, ME are using a totally different consumer Core. That explains the failure of applications.
(The Windows 98, 95, ME core is discontinued.)
Windows 2000 to XP will also break some programs, as each OS have a different version of the Windows Core. -

BTW i am not expereincing probs now for casual use. Internet and everything is fine. Basically my comp is working after the upgrade. And is faster too

Some can be of Overflow, not enough memory buffer space for extra-long strings or floating-point integers.

i will suggest doing a clean install of the programes...if you have the original installation discs for the missing or non-functionalprograme/s, et in in the cd--rom drive, run it and choose the uninstall option. once done, re-install again. the program should work if the creator (MS) supports it. your CD-rom should not be affected by the upgrade since it do not require any drivers to perform the read options...firmware should take carre of that. infact all DVD, CD and CD-r are CD-roms.
that is...u should be able to open an excel file created in a win98 (with office 97) computer from another computer running win2k (with office 2000 installed).
when u uninstall programs, the files created by the progam will not be lost so dun worry. -

that's your problem..."leave your system as it is and upgrade" when your disc is not an upgrade disc
money can't buy an upgrade dics fro win98 ---> win2k cox according to u a thing like this do not exist at all...but money can buy software to partition your hdd, hardware to back up and transfer your files at win98 partition to win2k partition after a clean install of win2k...u can uninstall the inert programes and reinstall them over your new win2k system.. -
