Computer Problem - Help and Advice Needed Urgently!

Due to the inefficient of window xp, as time goes by the os will start to boot up slower then usual. this is due to the registry having load of rubbish and all this will add to the start up of window xp. my suggestion is to reinstall window xp if you can. else do a disk cleanup as well as a speed disk. after doing the speeddisk, it should boot faster then before.
As for the black patch, most probably it will be driver problem because if the laptop screen start to fail, it will be more like dead spot rather then black patches. -

overclock means u tweak it manually so that it can run even faster and be more efficent than it was when it was factory-made

not recommended if you don't even know about it. excessive heat will be generated resulting in faster tear and wear. then again, if it's an old pc without warranty.. i say why not.

Not been wanting to shut down my PC ever since I had such a hard time booting it up yesterday (i.e. long boot-up, empty screen for a long long time, etc..).. Anyway, it has been fine ever since I have not shut it down. Ha ha..
Have also purchased and installed Norton Internet Security as suggested by one of you.. Shall see how it helps.. Did detect a few threats and had them removed.. -

By the way some Graphic card is "Overclock" by default by the manufacturer(Like my graphic card) -

I think the old ones can overclock. It can be overclock by using overclocking tools(software) or by soldering on the graphic card(solder something onto the Vcore,Voltage core,but very dangerous as modifying the Vcore can cause the Graphic card to Melt!!!)Originally posted by M©+square:recent GFX cards can overclock.

GFX Speed is Engine Clock(MHz) and Memory Clock (MHz) -
By the Way the latest Driver version for ATI GFX is Catalyst V5.12(Just Release)

Well, whenever I try to turn off my PC (eh.. guys.. not notebook), and start it again, the problem would go on.. Long Long time to start Windows.. Windows started once but only to restart automatically..
Anyway, Norton Internet Security didn't work then.. Installed ATI whatever version 5... Only to keep receiving the message that I am not authorised to change or whatever because I am not the administrator.. that I need to approach the administrator (if I am not the administrator of my own Home PC, then who is?) Anyway, uninstalled the Control Centre (cannot bother to remember the name..)
Well, keeping the PC system on all the time would work.. but I cannot probably keep it on all the time, right?
Still hesitant on cleaning up my whole system by doing a complete system recovery.. That would be a last resort.. -
Do plug anything to ur USB before u boot up? Eg. External Portable Hard Drives?

Spyware could be the problem. Viruses also. Scan for spyware and viruses. Then shut down computer. Wait for a while and on it again. If the same thing happens, you have to ask a computer expert. u installed any new softwares or drivers recently? Excluding that norton thing of course. Can you boot into safe mode?

No, I uninstalled the ATI something Control Centre.. I wouldn't uninstall the Control Panel..
Then I might have recalled correctly that i've met with this problem before.
It leaves us to
1) HDD (Old/Super undefragmented)
2) Driver incompatability
3) CPU overheat or Fan stop
If you believe that the problem arised after you've installed the ATI driver. Then I'd suggest that you do a [system restore] to your last point when you haven't installed the driver.
Or
CPU/system recovery
Or delete thru MS Prompt(ask MS Dos expert).
Driver clashes are difficult to mend simply because it affects your OS.
It affects Registry and messes up Windows.
It is tormenting to sit before the screen and wait endlessly for your OS to start.
My personal solution is
Use Ext HDD to boot up. (Primary HDD)
Extract personal data from C:\ (internal HDD)
Format C:\ and install OS.
Transfer personal Data back to C:\ internal HDD. -
Aye.. happened to my computer twice... I upgrade very often U see.
My first problem was the blue screen of death... the clause ... incompatiable software driver... doesn't support latest directx version... do a "go back" function from control panel... to go back to later driver version.
My second problem.. I went to upgrade my monitor driver.
My advice - use the system restore function from the Start/Accsseries/system tools/system restore. first, to check the if it is the software problem. If it doesn't work... "go back to prevouus driver.... else say bye bye to your graphic card.
