What I suggest is, 1.73GHz Centrino Mobile Processor.
Try not to get one with AMD, uses more battery
at least 512 DDR2 ram running at 533MHz.
If you want mobility, get a 14" laptop.
If you dun mind carrying a heavier one with better graphics for gaming get a 15".
Super DVD drive is recommended since DVD is getting common nowadays. Dun be mistaken between CD-RW/DVD Combo drive and Super DVD drive. always check clearly to see which type of compact disc it burns and which type it reads.
at least 60GB.
At least 64mb of video ram since you play simple games.
If hardcore games then at least 256mb (this should usually used with a 15" monitor)
Get one with at least 2 USB. 1 is definitely not enough
VGA connector for presentations. all laptops have this nowadays
Bluetooth connection can come in useful.
Memory card slots. Decide for yrself which memory cards you use the most. MMC, SD is the most common.
Take note of warranty too. Get at least 3 years.
Laptop's rams are more expensive, and its best to upgrade the ram when you are buying it since different laptop models may use different type of rams.
USB is a must-have for any computer now. If you have a USB mouse just plug it in and you can use it. A few mouse brands may require you to install drivers but if you are using Windows XP most of the time its not necessary.
Brand is not a problem when it comes to tahan-ing long hours of use. Its the user's responsibility to make sure you use it for long hours in a well-ventilated area or air-conditioned room.
Wireless is intergrated inside all Centrino machines so dun worry.
Seems most ppl say the centrino is better as use less power??
Centrion got all wireless liao...so mean i dun need to buy the wat wireless card to get the signal right?..er...meaning to say.. if i at a place got network..i open the laptop, then can surf internet..no need those (a card wid a black colour attener)..

The fact is - it will always be Desktop. Mainly for the upgradability and powerful Technology catered for Desktops.
Laptop will win for it's portability. That's about all.
To win in specs....never.
But if portability is your main issue. Laptop/notebook is your choice. No second thought.
I've did a customized version of a Laptop within your budget(I've only done up the hardware part. All those warranty plus package were not selected as you wanted to compare specs only.)
You may want to go dell.com.sg and have a clearer view of your budget?
You decide from there.
Downside of this Model = NO dedicated GFX card.
- Have a look at the jpg file below.
- if a new Desktop were to be brought in to this Laptop VS Destop to compare. With 2.5k i can get a system 3 times more powerful than a laptop Specs-wise.
But Laptop's cost is the Mobility.

- Do lots and lots of research and side by side comparision with selected Laptops.
By now you should have 3-4 Laptops you're considering.
Good product knowledge is important to make wise choice, it makes your money spent worthwhile.

Both are very useful.
If you have some time to spare, order online and wait for delivery.
No time, just go down to Sim Lim Square, Harvey Norman, Courts or Safe Super Store and buy one.
Some advice:
1) Get a laptop which offers international warranty as you are travelling overseas. You have to pay more for this. How much I am not sure.
2) As you want to play games, I suggest you get a laptop with a minimum memory of 512MB.
3) Buy an insurance for your laptop. Singapore is so safe that I can see people leaving their laptops around and 1 hour later the laptop is still there. This is not the case overseas. 1 minute later you come back and that's it. It will be gone. If possible, buy a lock. The lock is usually a Kensington lock.
4) Don't sleep while travelling. I know you are tired, but there are people who will steal things when you are falling asleep. It doesn't happen in Singapore, but it happens elsewhere.
5) Ask for extra batteries and adaptors from the salesman in case you lose it while travelling.
6) Get a thumb drive or external HDD to back up your data. You never know when the laptop will decide to die on you. -

yea, my laptop has 512DDR2 ram and 1.73GHz. Internal wireless internet means the wireless network adaptor is built-in, you dun need any wireless network card to connect to wireless networks. Bluetooth is ANOTHER wireless technology used by mobile phones. so if you have a mobile phone that has bluetooth and you want to synchronise yr mobile phone and computer (contact lists, image/video/audio files etc), you can do so using bluetooth. Older phones uses Infrared, which is alot slower. I believe the Dell warranty for my corporate was the same as the public (dell website) one - cause I was comparing for doing personal purchase vs my corporate. Whoa! They advanced 2 models since the Comex. Mine is onli Aspire 5502WXMi. It has 2GHz and 80GB of hard disk space now. within yr budget, $2,499
I got mine at 2.2k last time cos of Comex. Plus effective bargaining on my mother's part
Its selling at Funan MC2 shop or Sim Lim Square around 3rd or 4th floor, can't remember... -
