Despite all the hype abt downloads , i believe that its overated. I believe that at least half the population in Singapore has downloaded some files through a P2p Network.
Can they catch them all.....most likely the gov is going to adopt a deterent strategy , catch a few , all scared , downloading goes down.

no govt is interested in catching their citizens over illegal downloading. its the copyright owner who is taking the legal action.
so the govt has to go through with it. -

Two men jailed for illegally putting music online

SINGAPORE : Two men have become the first in Singapore to be jailed for illegally distributing music online.
They were found guilty of having put hundreds of songs on an Internet chat relay channel for people to download.
One of the two men, Mohamad Azry, told Channel NewsAsia that since his arrest he had been asked to resign from a software company after his employers found out about his crime.
The 22-year-old was sentenced to four months' jail for illegally distributing some 650 copyrighted songs online.
Mohd Faizal, 21, got three months' jail for distributing almost 300 songs.
Under the law, both could have been jailed up to five years and fined up to S$100,000 each.
In mitigation, his lawyer said Mohd Faizal did not commit the offence for profit, and asked the judge to consider probation for the only child of the family.
Mohamad Azry, who was not represented by a lawyer, was almost in tears as he begged for leniency from the judge.
In sentencing, the judge said probation was not appropriate in this case as the offences were like computer crimes, which required great sophistication and skills, and as such would carry high fines which were beyond the families.
So light jail sentences were handed out instead.
But that did not stop the mothers of both offenders from breaking down in tears.
The Recording Industry Association of Singapore hopes this case sends a serious message to other would-be offenders.
Said Edward Neubronner, chief executive officer, Recording Industry Association of Singapore, "Unfortunately there are some who perceive that nothing will be done to them, and as you can tell, having them go to jail for this period of time sends a very serious message across. Stealing is stealing. It's a crime. The recording industry, the very music that you love is going to go away. Individuals suffer, families suffer. I think that's something young people should bear in mind their actions will also have consequences on their families."
Mr Neubronner added, "We have already 33-odd new cases last November and police are already working on them, and we'll continue to file more cases, pass them onto the police. If this problem persists, if people don't take this warning seriously and they think they can get away with this crime, then more complaints will be filed. But I hope it won't come to that."
Both offenders will return to court next month to appeal for the return of their seized computers, one of which carries personal family photographs.
But for now, it is time for them to face the music. - CNA /ct

but den in singapore dere are hardly any legal sites dat provide legal download.....further more even if hav den nid to pay thru credit card, which obviously mos youth do not hav............

come'on man... If the police are going to catch all the people who is downloading.. then i think there will not be enough place in the jail for the number man... Singapore government is like that de... cause a few and sentence quite ridiculas first then media keep reporting... then after that no aciton... just like the seat belts issue in the back seat of cars that time.
