Speaking from the developed world which are the western nations:
In the 18th century, men who exihibited aristcratic or poetic impressions were favourite among women. Aristocrats and Poets were preferred by women of the time.
In the early 19th century, Men who exibited boyish charms and romantic prowess had the cake.
Int he 40s- 60s, Men who were mysterious and wearing black all the time took the cake with the women
After World War 2 Then in the 70s to 90s, Hollywood Glamour men Arnold n Stallone who exibited brute musculanity and caveman behaviour took the cake.Because of the effect of World War, women grew up favouring such tendencies
Now in the 2000s, Intelligence, Asset power, educated men taking the cake
I remember Time magazine featured an article some years ago, in which they speculated how men are viewed by women.
Men with high testosterone levels tend to have more masculine features - square-jawed, thick facial hair, thick eyebrows.. and they tend to be more sexually attractive to women as these features advertise their fertility (since testosterone plays a large part in fertility of a man). Hence women prefer these guys for flings, as they are biologically wired to do so.. for the sake of reproduction of the human race.
However when women want to settle down, they tend to do so with men with more feminine features.. since feminine features suggest lower testosterone levels, which means less aggression, lower tendency to stray, and a higher likelihood of staying behind to take care of the child faithfully.
They also quoted some informal study that suggested that women during their ovulation phase of their menstrual cycle (the fertile period) tend to prefer the masculine looks if given a choice. But these same women show a preference for the more feminine features during their non-fertile menstrual phase.
I thought that offered an interesting biological/evolutionary perspective.
It seem to suggest that women prefer getting impregnated by the masculine males, and prefer the feminine males to take care of the offsprings.
