i m sec 3 now and i m streamed to the triple sci stream and i haf done fairly well in my exams the past 2 year..i m woundering if i should go jc or go poly..
my father is not very well off and my family is struggling to make ends meet
very poor that i dun even have a handphone and i m still using a 56k internet...
jc or poly...i m not sure i want to go jc becuz it is a easier way to go to uni and wiff a degree job prospects are excellent a compared wiff a diploma..but.. poly i can go straight to work so help my father cope wiff family...
some of my teacher told me go poly then work for few years then go uni further study.. but i tot by the time then i would be working and stufdying...
so help is needed
btw i m going for the accounting banking sector as my aunt is a account and she earns a lot of money..i wantt to be like her and provide for my family..
i got 2 questions..
is it true that if u have a only a degree u can go far in this sector unless u further your studies?
and as u all know poly is 3 years but my ns is when i m 18..so clash wiff my poly...so do is it true that i have to go army first then come out 20 y.o and complete my final year??
plz help me.

and no...u will not go army when u turn 18...after your o level...u either apply jc,poly or ite...2 years of jc and ite(nitec)...and u are off...that means u get 2 years deferment from ns once u go into these tertiary education...
when u in poly,upon matriculation...u will receive the deferment letter and u are suppose to apply for deferment on the mindef website...this case...u will get 3 years deferment...up to the point of your education in poly ends...

erm can u help me ask stellazio on this ? on the sumn of salary i would get as a accountant as a diploma grad as compared to a a degree grad
btw i also want to be a accountant for life i know can earn a lot of $$ so i want to be one and my parents nid not work anymore

for degree...if u wanna continue working and studying for the degree at the same time...u can opt of part time degree...places like NUS and NTU provide them...althought its gonna be very tiring...plus it will be a near 4 years course... -

majotiry in my skool go JC...but some in my skool say if u wana be an entrepeuner go poly...if u wan higher education so that u hav a slight chance of landin a betta job in future go JC lo....jsu make the choice accordin 2 yr instincts when de time comes

but i think if u wanna earn money as fast as possible...go for jc and do what combo u need to get the accountant job..because jc is only 2 years...it saves alot of time...
however...u need to make sure your grades can make it in jc and do well..cos it will be very hard... -
u are only sec 3 now.. u still have a lot of time to think..
advise u not to worry too much about money.. there's always financial assistance..
not sure abt jc, but in poly, u can get a study loan or pay using cpf.. i have frens who really almost wanted to give up bcos of financial issues.. but they persisted.. im not any better.. my sch fees are paid by my sis's cpf now.. will have to repay her when i come out to work.

in a family staying together everyone havs to play a part...mayb u will want to tell us more about how your family's doing...what other more members still need to feed and why your parents poor cannot afford your education. if they can at least work and pay for the very basics...food, accomodation, daily neccesities etc...then even if u r still young at sec 3 you can play yr own path...yesy u may think a profession can earn u $ but as u grow older u may regret since its a job u dun like and may hav to carry ba lls to stay a life and go up the ladder...there is no sure win trade now...u can earn they also can ear... worse if they cheaper than u
we cannot tell u what to do and can only advice...u hav to read on from the postings here and decide. still i feel your family should at least be fair to u by letting u have a chance to go for what u want...its not like when the house is poor and evryone still wanna live in a dream world drive own car, eat restaurant and dragon flesh, gamble, squander, sit around idle giv stupide excuse not even want to work to pay for his/ her own 3 meals a dday etc -
For NS, there's NS deferment. You have to apply for it. All polys will provide you the forms to do so. There's always pros and cons to every route you choose. You have already stated them. What you need is to weigh them. Seek advice from your friends, relatives, teachers or even your councellor in school.
Since you want to help lesser your parents' burden, I would suggest you choose the poly route. That's because with a diploma, you can work. Plus, when you are in NS, you also collect some salary.

if accounting is what you want, then do this. go poly do accounting programme, then during ns, take up part-time professional accounting cert like acca or whatever. they tend to be better valued than an accounting degree. even uni grads who want to switch to accounting do the course... what's more, with an accounting dip, i believe you can get some exemption. going this route can also help you save time. so by the time you ord, you would have already or at least come close to getting that accounting pro cert... provided your ns vocation is not that busy. see this site for your reference : http://www.icpas.org.sg/Originally posted by laotaozi800:wad i mean it that is it true that u cant go far in this sector without a degree? -
there are some ppl who born luck with everything....ppl to guide them, self control wisdom in0born or developed, a positive family nusleus and correct friendship herding, in a well to do family for them they can take the shortest possible path to certification and success in their careers.....some borned rich are proud ...for u and many other average ppl in the streets may not be so gifted with talents or riches...so we may have to take a longer way to reach our goals.
the most important thing is dun compare...the time, efforsta dn strain u used ion comparing will only go backwards instead of goiing forward. -
one thing to consider fer jc......if u can do fairly well in sec sch without much pain den go JC lor...........better.....but den if u struggled v hard den onli can get fair gd grades den poly might be better fer u.........

I am not sure about being an Accountant can make alot of money(but I hope so!) but I know it should be able to provide a stable income and lead a decent life. At least, at least thats what I heard when I applied for that course...
Since you want to have a stable job and I recommend that you do go to JC and after that apply to enter Uni(NTU or SMU). It is not difficult to enter Accountancy (Since I can get in) and it is, as far as I know, the surest way to enter that course and get a job. It is only a 3yr honours course (compared to almost other course that is 4yrs) but the starting pay is among the lowest (like 2k) but the increment is fast and job opportunites are pretty ok. You can take a science course and still enter Accountancy.
I am not sure about the poly route but I know its longer or maybe tougher?

Anyway, you are still so young now. Sec3! and many things can change along the way.
Think if you can make it to the triple science stream don't think you will have much problem in JC at least. Steady chop chop job must be Sec>JC>Uni>work I guess.
Anyway now its so enter Uni from poly so if you really wanna go poly its still good. -
Just a word of caution, what jobs are 'hot' now may not be so hot in the future and different skillsets may become more important in the future as well, as to what these are, it is impossible to predict. Some countries have too many accountants and the pay is not so good, some country they starving for accountants and pay more. Also, there are a lot of other well paid occupations other than accounting, have you actually had a look around?
It's very difficult to make choices like that esp when you are only sec 3, I am about to graduate from my (accounting finance) degree and I'm still not sure what is the best path career wise for me.
My advice is to pick something you think you will enjoy doing, but if its something like painting or acting or becoming a rock star then pick something else first lah, not meaning to offend those people trying to be rock stars but the realistic choice is to do something a bit more 'practical', you can always try to be a rock star part time.

Oh yeah... you can always go JC, then sign on to become officer in NS and you will get paid well to study at UNI also. Can always explore the different scholarship options as well.
