I dun really think it makes a diff. whether JC or poly by the time u reach NS u shld have a "steady" income and does not require ur parents to give u allowance anymore. as for the money to further study, u can always apply for study loan. thats how i pay my uni sch fee....

and no...u will not go army when u turn 18...after your o level...u either apply jc,poly or ite...2 years of jc and ite(nitec)...and u are off...that means u get 2 years deferment from ns once u go into these tertiary education...
when u in poly,upon matriculation...u will receive the deferment letter and u are suppose to apply for deferment on the mindef website...this case...u will get 3 years deferment...up to the point of your education in poly ends...

and as u all know poly is 3 years but my ns is when i m 18..so clash wiff my poly...so do is it true that i have to go army first then come out 20 y.o and complete my final year??

Good that you are beginning to think now. Most students now a days don't give a damn about how their family is doing since they are those rich A-hole children.
Think you should go study JC. When you finish your O level, the market for Diploma and Degree holders may have changed. And don't forget your NS which is another 2 years. The demand would might have changed by then. Example: IR Diploma courses now most probably are for the ladies cuz for the guys, while they are in the Army, 2 batches of Diploma and 2 batches of Degree holders would have come out too.
Degree, on the other hand, is always on demand since our dear government likes to make changes, so degree holders aren't so much of a "bookworm" compared to diploma holders 2~3 years ago.
True that being an accountant can earn you big money: those very high up in the management level where you just need to sign documents. Provided that you have worked long enough and not much of a life since accountanting jobs are quite bored and require long hours (feedback from my KPMG accounting friend. No relation with NKF one!).
So go into JC. While in the army, you still got some time to decide where you want to go and what to study. -
Yeah accountants earn big bucks.. I was from JC and in about 3 months time I will be finishing my NS and soon after that I'll be in SMU doing Accountancy. I'm having a headache trying to figure out how to pay for my degree. Anyway, you are in Sec 3 now? Train on your fitness until you can be super fit. During NS try your best to qualify for OCS and when you do qualify you sign on and get their scholarship. Settle already. Actually if your very keen to do accountancy and very sure you are not going to do anything else, go for the diploma. So you can work first and later on upgrade yourself to a degree.

In a way, I sort of agree with you. But after 2 years in the army, things may change. So you may be suffering in the end. (I got a Diploma in Business, Majored in HR managment and Events Management. 2002, diploma graduates were hot. After 2.5 years in the army, everyone has a degree when I came out. I'm not disagreeing with you, say you're wrong, or you're giving a bad suggestion. Just that I have to remind our friend of the "beauty" of "ever-changing-Singapore" aka Kiasu~ism. And how some are suffering now (or maybe just me lah... ). -
Oh ya... Sign on in the Army as a Regular and sure steady chop chop income and get alot of $$$ even during your NS...

Even if you go the JC way, you still have to complete your NS before entering university to get a degree, so in the end still the same? Why do most people go to JC? Its because they do not actually know what they want to do but what they know for sure is getting into university is easier through the JC route. However this guy has already know what he wants to do which is accountancy. Furthermore, I doubt most of the subjects in JC will help much in a degree in Accountancy, only economics and maths I guess. Also, if you don't do well in JC, you may not qualify for the degree you want whereas if you go do accounting in poly, at least you can have a diploma to fall back on. You are right, Singapore changes its demands in the workforce quite often but for accountancy, I'm quite certain it is still in demand. i m very keen in doing an accountant for the rest of my life..and not other jobs...so i m woundering if i should get a diploma first,ns,then go out and work.

Go poly. There you can apply for Joint Poly-SAF Sponsorship or something like that. I receive a letter by the SAF, Army and Navy after my O Levels. They sponsor your education in poly. The condition is that you have to work for them. There is also a restriction of courses. IT and Engineering seems to be the courses they sponsor. If want to go SP and is interested in marine studying, the courses are also under this scheme. This will greatly lighten your parents' load.

do you study principal of accounts?it is not needed but at least helps you to grasp concepts much better when pursuing your diploma or degree...

I grad from ngee ann poly diploma in electronics
for me i will not said which side is good or which side is bad
it all depends on you
Polytechnic education is in the form of modular approach, which mean u passed one module , u wont have to accumulate any amt of knowledge for the next module ,unlike the A level system
A level is good if you are very good in academically and able to absorb after the crunch of O level(Which obviously i cant)
humbly speaking,I would said the choice is yours
first lets look at 2 route of advancement
poly route
You take up a studies of your choice and you excel ,after 2yrs of NS
you go out to work with a starting pay of 1.5 (provided you write well in resume and work with MNC)
you will rise to even an accountant pay within 2 yrs
JC route
You study for the 2 yrs timeframe to pass the Ultimate A level
(Provided you work real smart for your studies)
and After 2 yrs NS you will get into Uni and study for 3 yrs
(which u started out as Basic Graduates ) after 3 yrs later
You can used your parent CPF for your education which you have to
repay after you graduate
The bottomline is this .....study
btw if you think an accountant is rich and glamour , think of the number of hours she/he have to spend on audit , tally figures
it isnt a easy job and some of my fren i know jump into insurance
