Flowers, a must have on Valentines Day?

My gf and I dont celebrate valentine's day as well. It's just a tactic by commercial companies to make more money. They must be very happy that so many people fall into the trap. We feel that Valentine's Day is determined by both parties, not by commerical companies or whoever who set this date as Valentine's day. Every single day can be a Valentine's day if you want to, or there can be no single Valentine's day in the next 10 years.

In fact I requested my bf not to give me flowers on V day. I explained to him why and he understands. To me, there's no meaning in it, simple as that. Birthdays and anniversaries are most significant, at least it holds some meaning and that the special day only belong to us.

I dun understand why must give flowers, they'll die after a few days without proper caring.
So, giving flowers is telling the other to buck up or the entire relationship will end?

What's the use of being showered with flowers and chocolates and whatever else on valentine's day but being treated crappily the rest of the year? girls just wanna show that they got someone giving them flowers. imagine a girl during a date without flowers is surrounded by others with big bouquet in their hands
