Sharp rise in fungal eye infections among contact lens users

SINGAPORE : Hospitals and eye centres are reporting more cases of fungal eye infections among contact lens users.
This has resulted in three patients undergoing urgent corneal transplants to save their sight.
Twenty-two patients suffered from infections of the cornea, a transparent window covering the eye.
Previous infections related to contact lens use were caused by bacteria and were easier to treat.
But fungal infections can have adverse visual consequences if diagnosed and treated late.
All the patients used disposable soft contact lenses and 21 of the 22 reported using Bausch and Lomb's ReNu multipurpose contact lens solution to clean them.
The Health Sciences Authority has notified Bausch and Lomb of the association with ReNu multi-purpose contact lens solution.
The infections are caused by the Fusarium fungus species.
The Singapore National Eye Centre has treated 19 patients for the infection since May 2005.
Changi General Hospital reported three new cases this week.
The Ministry of Health and the Contact Lens Practitioners Board have alerted doctors and medical practitioners to be on the look out for potential fungal infections of the cornea and to refer the lens user to an ophthalmologist early.
Contact lens users are reminded to practise proper contact lens cleaning and care regimens, to not use disposable contact lenses beyond their recommended disposal period and to replace contact lens storage cases at least every three months.
Multi-purpose solution in the lens storage case must be changed every day, even if the lenses are not used daily.
Users should stop wearing the lenses if they develop any redness, blurring of vision or pain of the eye and visit a doctor or contact lens practitioner. -

my contact lenses is monthly 1.. but i always use past the month..
then somemore i nv change the solution everyday..
like i take out on fri... change..
then mon put back on...

wah lau. i always use 1 month lenses for two months leh. some more i'm using that bausch n lomb renu soln.

mine is permanent contact lens...i use the solocare brand...they give this anti-microbial lenses case which i change everytime i use a new bottle of solution, abt one mth plus i will change the case.
i will rinse the case & cover everyday n refill new solution. shld be ok bah...til now no big problem. -

omg! some of u guys have such bad habits! please change them.
your eyes are not to be treated lightly. some $$ are not meant to be saved. -
yup take care if you are using contact lens.
I am very surprised that quite alot of people do not know they should replace the lens container on a monthly or maybe bi monthly basis.Bacterial and protein built up accumulate on these container over time that is not easily removed.Some people use the same old container for years and they do not realise how dirty it is. -

didnt noe need to change the casing, the cb doctor nv tell me!!!! sometimes i use my monthly lens pass the month, dun seem much diff...

hmm .. the case must change for every how many months ?
and the solution in the case muz change every day ?
i change every 1 week or 2 weeks , is this ok ? but i got rinse the lense after takin them out from the case -

but why is it so drastic that 21 out of 22 users of the bausch and lomb renu multiplus people kena?? is their 'no rub' thing really not effective??

i really din noe mus change the case every now and then
and i jus learnt need to change the solution daily even if dont wear. but even then, abit the busy daily lah so never change.
if i had known all thesei prob would have gone for daily lenses right from the start since i dont wear so often.
how much do daily lenses cost? and any particular brands to recommend? wat differences are there in terms of the lens between a daily and a mthly one?

Reason? same as you have to change your lens once per month cos the lens slowly accumulate a certain % of protein built up per day as it can't be really 100% cleansed everything you wash them and after 1 month,the residue protein built up supposedly make the pair of lens unsafe for wearing.
So same that the len case will also have this residue protein built up left everyday and it slowly builds up.If you use the len case for too long,this residue protein built up will affect the lens when you store it inside with the solution.The lens case will also slowly build up germs.
That is why i only use this particular solo care brand of solution that give a free lens case per bottle,so i can have a free lens case change every month.
And yes the solution must be changed everyday if you had wore the lens for the day. -

i change the solution everyday, except for sat & sun if din wear then i dun change... -

i just bought that soln lor. wah lau how. i used to use the solo care 10-min one. den switch to this coz' no need rub. so how now brown cow?
