Non-Religious People Live This World For?

Hi,
I had always wanted to ask this question..
How do non-religious people live this world? What are their guiding belief and philosophy?
It's very difficult for me to understand.
Say, you are an atheist. You don't believe in any existance of God, or any life after death. You dont believe in any form of faith, or prayers, or any judgement after you leave this world. (dead).
So the question is, do you do any good at all? You do good for what? You live this world for what?
Why haven't you gone on a rampant destruction and wantonly satisfy yourself, just do whatever to suit yourself.

You live for yourself. If you're a religious person, that's fine but don't go around insulting other ppl who don't believe what you believe. A false priest with a bible is more dangerous than a drunkard with a bottle of booze.

Hmm.. we live for our dream/goal? or rather for me.. i'll just work hard for my dream as i believe fate is in my own hands.. and i have to clarify that not beliving in god doesn't mean that makes me a person with no moral blah blah.. i believe all this attitude/moral things stem down to the family teaching and the environment... Look around you and you'll find that even ppl with religions do commit crime and stuff.. so try not to always equate religion to everything..

both are equally contentious, i mean, atheists usually fight with members of montheistic faiths over existence of god, and people differ much in values, for example, is it right to hang a murderer or to cane a rapist?
Going by these two definitions, i dont know what it meant by non religious anymore, since every one would have their own system of belief or values
besides, even the so called pious people have committed much crime as would any other person -
for the sake of continuing mankind. i am part atheist. dont question my other part, because i myself dont know what to call that other part.

well said, i am interested in the religions values, more than the religion itself. i also feel that anything can be right and wrong, it is all up to you to decide. what is right and wrong in the first place. when most of the time, right is determined by the things that the majority see as right.Originally posted by laurence82:x2

Why?
You don't do good because you expected something out of it. Sure, most of us would want something in return, but if you can do it, why not? Just helping an old lady to pick up her fruits won't kill you, unless you have brittle bone disease. The old lady doesn't benefit from you, neither do you benefit from her.
Why would one wants to destruct themselves for no reason? Apart from psycological reasons which make one do so, nobody in their right frame of mind would do such things. Why would they want to destroy the world if they depend on it for survival? Remember, everything in nature is interlinked. Don't think that you can survive without them. If you want to try, kill everybody and everything in your own house and tell us what is the results. No doubt you can go outside and work, but you depend on others to give you work. You can setup your own business, but you depend on nature to give you the natural resources to build these equipment. -
I don't need some higher being telling me what's right and wrong - there is a moral compass within myself.
I don't blindly follow instructions cos I'm afraid of punishment by big daddy up there
And I'm not so scared of the unknown that I need a security plan for living so that I'm insured for a happy afterlife. -
Being an Atheist, my guidance in this world lies in Science.
With Science, I can always look forward to new discoveries and new theories to puzzle myself over.
Being an Atheist, I believe that death is not the end, although I am not religious and do not believe in a heaven or a hell, but I believe Life is a dream that we will wake up from after the end has come.
I believe that death is a mystery for Science to solve. -
I live for myself.
I live for my friends/family.
I follow my rules.
I do what is right.
I used to be a religious girl, go to church faithfully every week, give money, call the new comers etc. Until i get into depression then i begin to reflect back. Doing so much and giving so much money is not going to get me a place in heaven. I was working for the church free-of-charge and not gaining anything back. What's the use of it all?

My philosophy is created and shaped by my personal foundings and beliefs...

Lol just because you dont believe in god doesnt mean u have to hurt other people. Why dont u ask all the animals to go kill themself since they hav no god, I live becuz there're things i haven accomplished yet. Plus i love my parents n frens

He made us imperfect and punish us for that. He made some people to be born in
awkard situations where they MUST sin in order to survive, or they're simply influenced by the environment where they have no control at all.

A college student was in a philosophy class, where there was a class
discussion about whether or not God exists, The professor had the following
logic:
"Has anyone in this class heard God?" Nobody spoke.
"Has anyone in this class touched God?" Again, nobody spoke.
"Has anyone in this class seen God?" When nobody spoke for the third time,
he simply stated, "Then there is no God."
The student did not like the sound of this at all, and asked for permission
to speak. The professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the
following questions of his classmates:
"Has anyone in this class heard our professor's brain?" Silence.
"Has anyone in this class touched our professor's brain?" Absolute silence.
"Has anyone in this class seen our professor's brain?" When nobody in the
class dared to speak, the student concluded, "Then, according to our
professor's logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!"
The student received an "A" in the class. -

i'm an atheist myself and i believe that i live for myself and nothing else.
one thing i cannot stand, however, are those people who preach their religion as though its the best and look down on the other religions or at people who are atheists themselves.
i mean, look. i respect your religion but u don't have to come teling me "oh, without a religion, u might be just going to hell after your death" you're a christian/buddhist? fine. keep it that way. Don't come shooting your mouth off about how believing in the same faith as you would help me attain edification. -
The problem with religion is that once you have decided that your life can't be lived without a God, you are then faced with the dilemma of deciding which God is the true God. And in that decision, you will tend to choose the God that best represents your own interpretation of this world.
Besides, notions like salvation, damnation and eternal life kinda makes me wonder what and for who these religious people are really living their pious lives for. -
our aim in life is to throw stones at religious pple and call them devils when they managed to miraculously cure someone of a fatal disease.... kidding
Religious pple live for their future in heaven.... pple like me just live for e moment. -
And to answer your questions, there are these things called the law, social conditioning, moral conscience or even just human decency that inhibit people from committing horrible deeds and instead perform good ones.
