On the contrary, San Guo Zhi, the official history of the 3 Kingdoms, described Cao Cao as coming from a prestigious family - Cao Cao was the descendant of a premier, his grandfather was a marquis and his father was a high ranking official.

No doubt Luo Guanzhong's work romanized the historical account. Furthermore, we can argue since Zhao Yun was carrying a baby and leading civilians, Cao Cao's army will be restrained in their attack on him. Probably they wanted to take them hostage and hence will not try to shoot him dead.
