shows how good the singapore government is and how much they can inspire nationalism in singaporeansOriginally posted by Ponders:Singaporeans in a "first world" country, will try not to identify themselves as a Singaporean but will act as if they are a local of that "first world" country.
Singaporeans in a "third world" country will flaunt wealth and make as much noise as possible so that everybody in 1km radius of them will recognise them as Singaporeans!!

I was in a "First world" country and the Singaporea association there orgainsed a National Day Dinner.
SIngapore national anthem played, NOBODY except the Singapore Ambassador and family SANG!!!
That "first world" country's national anthem played, every Singaporeans sang loudly!!!
WTF!! THey are not even citizens of that country.
Me was in the same predicament as you, me was in the States on work assignment and during a dinner appointment with the Singapore Trader's Association, the national anthem was played. No one except me and a few of my colleagues crossed my fist across our chest to sing. The rest of the people were busy chatting with the glass of wine while the anthem was played. Me also overheard that someone said that we were crazy to sing the anthem in the States.Originally posted by Ponders:Singaporeans in a "first world" country, will try not to identify themselves as a Singaporean but will act as if they are a local of that "first world" country.

that's quite true . although the people from my school "sing" ( they will just open their mouths ) .. it is not truely due to their loyalty , but because they are " forced " to . those who do not sing the national anthem will have to attend detention .Originally posted by NewAge:The problem relates to a sense of belonging. Though Singapore has been trying hard to incalcate a sense of belonging, its typically not working at all. Even in school not everyone is singing the national anthem how do u expect ppl to sing it oversea or be proud of the atheles. One more point to note is that the athletes are usually not Singaporeans by birth or can be consider foreign talent so ..........
