there are few perspectives to look this.
If you want to just address the task at hand which is to defend the country from a military perspective,probably only males serving NS is adequate for now.The drawback is 2 n half or the 2 yrs service period does take out considerable time during the development period of a young man.No doubt several skills are also learnt during service,but that is not the only means to learn.
If you want to look at it from a gender equality perspective,i dun think females serving NS is stepping into fulfill a traditionally male role.Serving the country is duty of each citizen irregardless of gender.National service though as the name implies, is more military service.i dun think we need females in tat area yet.I dun think anyone would be willing to serve their country for a period of time unless legislated to do so as in our case.The guys have to and so u have to understand their complaints.So why only the guys are made to serve their country through military service when the girls dun have to? Is it because girls
would serve their country without being told to? ok what kinda national service are girls already doing? questions that can start another discussion thread.
Basically guys just need to go on with NS knwing they have done their part.For gals stop looking national service as a male thing and show wat u can or wat u have already been doing for ur country.Hope to have some female responses -
hmm... so should the ladies be subjected to ict as well? they can always try poking needles on the newly conscripted..

Fighting terrorists..must be seen as a duty of all singaporean now especially modern day. Hence I respected woman who serving National Service who had stand side to side with us fighting for singapore. I think all should beg for the chances to service our nation.

i think girls should serve NS... The points about not fit physically etc are not valid bcos all the girls can be classified into PES E... Be service medics and clerks.
National Service is a citizen duty. Since the NS guys did a service to the nation and the females did not, and GOVT claims that there is no shortage of manpower to conscript females, maybe we can shorten NS to 1 year then there will be shortage for females to be conscripted!
Another way is to let all those of serve NS be exempted from taxes. Since the females nv serve NS then pay more taxes to compensate lor... -

If Sg women want equal opportunities, let start with equal NS first for them too.
Maybe through that, NS will become 1 yr each for both sexes. That will be true equality. -
Give every singaporean NSmen a rifle and 2 box of live round to keep at home to fight terrorist immediately when spotted. We will required less regulars since all are regulars then. Like what I mentioned before, likely the terrorists will become beehive when cross fired with us in a HDB estates. No need
No need exempt all taxes..Just reduce... The reduction in Total Revenue will not happen. This is due to the reduction of manpower in the VARIOUS MINISTRIES as a result of the " conscipted female clerks and receptionists" . Operating costs will lower. The reduction in taxes not only applies to guys it will also apply to all the girls since they had served national service. Morevover, such work experience in these jobs will also benefit the girls when they go out work next time. This may even increase the overall work productivity of the workers, leading to better economy. -

Haha..you guys are weird.
From a pragmatic point of view, Spore doesnt have enough resources to make ALL Sporeans serve NS.
Besides, all this talk abt making gals do NS, sounds suspiciously like the case of sour grapes to me...hmm. I guess most guys just cant stand the idea of us gals so-called relaxing and shopping whilst you guys have to spend 2 years serving the country right???
The thing is, if gals do NS, the economy wlll suffer because everyone will graduate later, start work later etc etc.
If guys & gals do NS, we gals graduate later=start work later=later marriages=lesser kids
And making us do NS will make us tough women....haha. No more sweet, ladylike women to peel prawns for you guys.
We will be having even higher standards than before.
All in all, women will be relatively more tough-minded after NS & lesser women will be happy being housewives or even having kids.
Sheesh...doing NS AND giving birth is like doing Spore too many favours already. -

1stly i wanna say tat it is compulsory for spore guys to serve ns but its nt compulsory for women to get pregnant...thoyugh tis is strongly encouraged...personally i am neutral abt whether women shld serve ns but i wanna say sth from personal experience...
i have come across gals who have the cheek to come n say to guys tat ns is easy...nt tough...i came across tis gal who told a guy: ns very tough meh? i felt like telling her: nt tough...juz as relaxing as giving birth...

the interesting abt the society is tat it sympathises more with women...society sees pregnancy as tough but ns as some wad easy...jus cos women r suppoedly the weaker sex...so women r alredi getting favoritism from the society...
