i was at a construction of my friends company along oxley road there. so we got this huge cranes on the road. its not obstructing traffic though. but in less than an hour....MM bodyguards came along and tell us to disperse the cranes somewhere else... reason being.... the road leads to the MM house and its an eye sore if the MM were to see the cranes there.

Actually, I think their value is in having no ties to Singapore. The main reasoning is to allow for a neutral force with the capability to handle any racial problems. If any racial riots again, wouldn't you think that police would bias towards their respective races?
They are used for highly specialised jobs. Guarding normal ministers are SPF. They are usually used only for guarding sensitive installations. Recently, we saw them deployed for IOC. Damn cool looking, although some of them can pass as asians. -

So there are only 2 at any one time.
but there is a team of about 18-20 ADCs that rotates and represent the president for events that the president is not required to be present.
e.g. a foreign diginitary visits singapore on a personal non-state basis. (they are on holiday or fuel stop at changi)
the ADC will be there as a courtesy and guide to that dignitary.
