Self -control, indeed, is the basis of all the industrious virtues that have made the Chinese people economically successful whenever they have been allowed to prosper, whether in California, Malaya, or China proper. Unfortunately, although Confucius himself says, "Wealth and high station are what men desire", later Confucians turned warnings against the temptation of profit (Li) into a condemnation of profit, which meant that their influence was often turned against the development of Chinese industry and commerce. Thus, Confucians themselves werre perfectly happy to seek "high station" while stiffling the ability of ordinary Chinese to produce "wealth". Over time, this was an evil influence in Chinese history..

Confucius said: to love to learn is to approach wisdom, to work hard at doing what is good is to approach benevolence, to know shame is to approach fearlessness. He who knows these three things knows how to cultivate himself. He who knows how to cultivate himself knows how to rule men; he who knows how to rule men knows how to govern an empire.
