Don't really understand angmoh's english?

I am so upset
I don't really understand angmoh's english. I didn't pay attention to it. When I watched TVs, movies, cartoons when I was young, I would somehow automatically 'shut off' my ears and just relied on the subtitles.
And this made my english listening skill very poor. I don't have problem reading or speaking english, but when come to english listening from angmoh. I am completely helpless.
Luckily singapore english is not a problem to me, because it is kind of blend flavor of english and local accent.
The real problem came one day is I worked in a company where a lots of interaction with angmoh. Then I became dumb. I was so scared to talk to them. Because I was afraid that I talked the different topic from what they were saying.
I felt so inferior. I trained myself very hard, start to 'opening up' my ears when watching TVs, movies, radio. I am becoming better. Now, 80-90% of the work related conversation are good to listen. But when angmoh talk about their life stuff, I become dumb again. Those words are so strange to me. I couldn't really understand.
Do you have the same or similar problem?? I am so upset now.

depends where the angmoh come from.. irish/scotts usually quite bad

its just takes getg used to. make a few close collegues in the wrkpls whom u can confide in n ask for clarificatoins bout wat the ang mohs wer sayg.

just listen to them more. talk mroe to them after awhile you will get used to it. sometimes its just that the words sound weird cos of the accent. but of course it may be cos of slangs tooOriginally posted by picmonster:I am so upset

I also always read subtitles.
When it's a film in English, I read the Chinese subtitles.
When it's a film in Chinese, I read the English subtitles.
My ears tend to "space out" if I try to purely listen -

or you could always watch stuff without subtitles and force yourself to listen to what they are saying... -
the british people speak with a very nice elegant tone.........not too fast not too slow.....just nice.....but on the other hand.....the australians..........speech is like diarrhoea.......so fast..........everything..........so much so that i want to vomit........even if you can grasp their language..............you can't grab their breast or balls.....hahahaha

.... look at it this way. we go to the US and speak our English (not Singlish) the people there also may not understand us.... I now that for a fact 'cos it happened to me.

American, British, Irish easy to understand. It's when the Indians start talking English, half the time cannot catch. Not talking about Singaporean Indians, but those native Indians. Espeically over the phone faint, if face to face, at least still able to intuit based on lip reading.

ohh.. i had the same experience when I spoke to those ang mohs... I asked myself, do i have hearing problems or am I dumb... how come i dun get what they say but I get what they say on tv...
I guessed we probably relied too much on the subtitles and thus toned down our listening skills. I did try harder to understand what the ang mohs were telling me cos I really wanna get it right in what they are telling me so that it's not so paiseh.
So far, spoke to British, Americans, Germans and French. They seem ok to me... I agree that Australians do speak with a funny accent that I sometimes can't really catch. And also Indians... just spoke to one today.. he kept shaking his head.. I don't know if that's a yes or a no...

i'm ok with angmoh's english.
just dun add that aussie accent can liao. their accent very hard to understand sia.

I have real problems trying to understand the Scottish accent. Then again I don't feel so bad after my Canadian Ang Mo colleague asked me on the side if that guy is speaking English because he couldn't understand a word

indians usually still ok..
just sometimes cannt catch..either too fast or they talk machiam like rapping..
