Australians- are alright - I don't have a problem with them. They do have a problem with me because they say I talk too fast. Even australia has people speaking in different accents- you have the south aussie accent, the queenslanders who always attach a prefix of -hay to all their sentences , victorian accent which is known to be haughty and closest to the british accent, the sydney siders accent and the western australians.
I love the scottish and irish accents - it is all sing song. Whhharr ays mahh brackkie ( where is my brekkie aka breakfast) haha. -
french people's accent is still okay......i can still grasp.......but when you hear the australian......the glued tongue.......seems as though they have some tongue tied instances where their words stumble down the road......seems as though they have such a huge body......so much that they can't balance themselves................but i think the british people are much better........next the americans...............just nice and just right.........unlike the australian...........Originally posted by SGpork:i cant understand french pple talking to me in english..

here in singapore, some of us might be proficient in a single language, like english but the majority are english half bucket, chinese also half bucket. this is worrying.

true! My english sucks and i used to be much better in chinese. But after JC, i no longer touch much chinese materials except for occasional comics and newspapers. Having english as ur stronger language is definitely more beneficial here. -
Watch motorsports. You'll hear English spoken in French, German, Finnish, Italian, Japanese and a few British accents. It exists to a lesser extent in football too.
Or listen to the BBC World Service (88.9FM).

it takes time to get used to angmoh's accent, but it will only take less than one month if you got chance to talk to them more, you will be fine.

actually watching more movies and US dramas helps.

Luckily singapore english is not a problem to me, because it is kind of blend flavor of english and local accent.
The real problem came one day is I worked in a company where a lots of interaction with angmoh. Then I became dumb. I was so scared to talk to them. Because I was afraid that I talked the different topic from what they were saying.
I felt so inferior. I trained myself very hard, start to 'opening up' my ears when watching TVs, movies, radio. I am becoming better. Now, 80-90% of the work related conversation are good to listen. But when angmoh talk about their life stuff, I become dumb again. Those words are so strange to me. I couldn't really understand.
Do you have the same or similar problem?? I am so upset now.
The best way is to go to borders and get CD books - they are a little expensive, but they do work very well as unlike tv , which you unconsiously still trying to relies on your eyes. You can chose different type of CD books on different level of entry, you may want to try something like one of Harry Porter book which is more interest and easiler to start. Also the book is easily available which you can listen and look at the book at the same time. -
Its not actually their english but the way they put it to you. Singapore english is comfortable, even for me, because this is my home and always will be. However, if you are unfamiliar with the wit of angmohs...its gonna be hard to understand even if they dont use big words. my two cents worth.Originally posted by picmonster:I am so upset

dun worry too much about it.... me oso like that... n worse... now i work in ang moh country! ha.... well... takes a while to get use to... and never b afraid to ask them to repeat.... they will most prob speak a little slowly so that u can understand.... and sometimes, it is not about their accents but the slangs and phrases that they use......

I like the way the Hong Konger speak english. Russian speaking english is a bit of a problem. Swiss, no problem at all

Reading all the replies is therapeutic. Now I do not feel as bad about not always being able to fully understand native English speakers.
