This angmo was only allowed to be extradited back to Sg on the condition that we do not impose the death sentence. Unless we agree to this ridiculous demand imposed by the Ozzies, they would not send this fella back for trial at all. Rather than letting him go off scot free, we had to accept the terms. If anyone is showing discrimination, it is the white supremacists from down under..
Under the Penal Code, the penalty for murder is death (Sect 302). There is no way we can charge him for murder and let him off the death sentence under the law. So we have to reduce the charge to manslaughter.
If people want to protest about this leniency (and I think they should), direct your anger at the Australian government. -

It's only that the lawyer managed to find a "loophole" in the system, make very good use of it to reduce the charges. As long as you make sense to the judge, who cares you are foreigners? Don't forget, there are foreigners who were hung in Singapore as well for murder.
Case in point : try citing me a single successful example over the last 30 years of someone getting such good lawyers who have successfully defended some opposition politicians or successfully prosecuted an institution that has state interests in it. With no disrespect to the legal profession(well, only talking about those who are in this to make a decent, honest living 
), but I can never figure out how lawyers can function in a Judiciary so heavily politicised...
Being a lawyer in Singapore is hardly the same prospect as being one in the US/EU member nations where the Judiciary serves the purpose it's meant to function and is not one bit politicised to serve the exclusive and prejudiced interests of a select few. -

i got one explanation for this 2nd class treatment.
if you hang a foriegner, his country will make noise and the reputation of the singapore govt in the international scene goes down. eg. the australian drug dude recently hung.
however, if you hang a singaporean, no one is going to give a shit.

just look at our sports scene. we keep on importing foreign talent, however, has the govt even taken a look at our local talents??
Our local sportsmen, some very talented, are rejected because they are unable to meet the academic requirments to enter the sports school.
Foriegners are able to come and go as they please, once their contract runs out.
Sure, we will be able to accomplish Goal 2010, where sg will reach the world cup.

To sidetrack a little, what makes you think Singapore will even qualify for the World Cup in 2010? In essence, even their foreign talent scheme is nothing but a flop, which, to be fair, is what most people in Singapore(from what I have observed anyway) - though not speaking for myself, truth be told - are peeved with(I mean, who in their right mind would accept playing second-fiddle to inept, incompetent "foreign talents", who are unable to prove they are indeed better than the locals?). I'm sure no one will complain if they hired Guus Hiddink(that's the kind of foreign talent whose pedigree is unquestioned and accepted by people anywhere on the globe) to coach the national team, but just not some foreign clowns who has achieved nought.
That said, you might want to note that FIFA actually has policies in place to counter precisely the unscrupulous acts some nations would resort to by poaching talented players from other countries simply by giving them citizenships in exchange for money : under current FIFA regulations, no player who has represented a nation at any level(starting from the U15's all through to the senior squad) can represent another country unless the country in question happens to be confronted with unforeseen circumstances(ie.like the breakup of the former USSR/Yugoslavia for instance) for which the player could not possibly have envisaged. -

Correct! Many other countries force companies to be in charge of your allowance and medicals and housings after you retire. Singapore only got what CPF, some more they are actually your own money.
