I'm currently in my final year in a local uni. Prior to that, I served my NS and completed my poly education. I thought that being trained and qualified will be the way to a well-paying good job.
When I entered uni, I was full of zest and energy.
Now the story goes. I have a friend who completed ITE 2 years ago. He felt that I looked down on him cos I made it to uni. Perhaps it's because I made it to uni and he had not had a chance at tertiary education. Though I feel that he is not good academically, I told him not to give up. Maybe, I could not hide the way I felt when I told him to try pursue further eduation. What would you do?
Tell a friend to try even when u feel that he's not academically inclined? Or ask him to try something else? Either way, I'd be wrong.
My friend is doing biz dealing with the optical trade. Basically, he gets frames from China and sells them to shops here. He's doing very well and sells up to 200 frames weekly! He now drives his own car too. He may very well be earning 5-10k a month.
Now, everytime I see him, I feel envious and of course jealous at times. sometimes, even angry cos I feel that I'm being mocked at. It's like "SEE? YOU ARE IN UNI, SO WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU NOW?". I can only resign to my situation now.
When I told him that I feel that he's lucky to have found such a trade, he told me that it's his hard work that paid off. He said he had 6 months without pay.
But I had already gone 2 years without pay!
He claimed that his pay is only a mere few hundred to 2K plus on good months. Then I told him that his co very nice to him. Pay his company car, tel bill, electric bill, petrol, card bills etc .... It's just how he make his accounts.
Sigh, sigh....

Theres no need to compare yourself with your friend...
Are u happy with what you are doing now?
Your friend may have a job which is high paying and is doing well..but in the long run, is it a stable job?
or
would u prefer to have a job which is stable and increases over time and the demand of your job is high but very few can reach your level of expertise -
Let's just be contented with what we have alright

A degree doesn't guarantee you a good job, with good pay, and good fringe benefits. It has (and will) always be hardwork, work attitude, talent, and an element of luck.
For salaried employees, look at it this way.
An ITE cert opens the door to a 10 storey building.
A degree opens the door to a 50 storey highrise.
But once inside, it depends on yourself.
PS: No offense intended to anyone in particular. -
Relax la brother, concentrate on ur studies 1st. When you get ur degree liao come out dun be over picky on ur jobs and take whats available in the mean while but still continue to look for jobs that you want. Trust me la ren bi ren qi si ren one la, u nvr noe maybe ur hardwork might pay off someday too. Best of luck for now.

The grass is greener on the other side. Success depends on opportunity and hard work and risk. Many without degrees open their own business and make it after much hard work and risk. These are the top 1%. Others fail at their businesses.
Degree holders/employees may not earn as much but they get a steady income. However they may not be happier or have a more satisfying job. It is destiny. Decide what you want. -

sometimes..behind every sucess..there is a long and tedious road..so ur friend happen to b both... -
hmm...this might be the wrong place for a ear...but whatever..
you are probably just envious that your fren is already making money while you are still stuck taking bus to school and eating canteen food...
its just a passing phase...everyone will get to that stage...either sooner or later... -

i wanted to get a degree not because i want to whine like u do.
it's because i have a vision of what i want to be. forget ur frens first. focus on wad u r doing. once u get a job then say la. -

bcos we are of higher education than many hawkers but we earn less then them !!!
They can afford to drive nice car but salaried people like us leh??
So while it is true that having a skill maybe better of than a degree, is depends on what you really want to do with your life and interest.

In my opinion, ur friend is ur friend, you are you. Why are u jealous now? Is it because u felt very "saaat" that u had a place in uni while he entered ITE? (So u can't handle the imbalance now)
What's gonna happen if a person's peers are full of doctors and lawyers while he is just an engineer? Bury ur head in the ground like an ostrich?
I also feel that a degree can only get u a gd entry level position (unless ur a honours grad in civil service) but ur not letting it end there right?
If u have the hunger, be it a $10,000 or $20,000 salary per month, u will surely try ur best to get there. That's more important.
At the end of the day, a degree is not useless. It depends on how u wanna make the best of it or apply the knowledge that u have learnt.
If ur friend is really doing so well with just an ITE cert, he's not lucky, he fcuking smart! Treat him as an inspiration pls.
