laptops in universities

  hi all,
  
  for those of you who's in SIM or SMU or have friends in there and you're(or they) are studying Business Management, is there a need for a laptop?(either due to nature of schoolwork or requirement by school)
  
  because my sister going either of these 2 soon, so we need to plan the budget in advance.

  My sis is in SIM, and she doesn't have a laptop.
  
  It's not a necessity, but it might be an advantage to have one in the sense that it allows her to work while on the move.
  
  If your sis doesn't plan to bring her laptop to school on a regular basis, then you might just want to buy another desktop PC for her own use. Cheaper, more powerful, and more upgradeable.

  When I had one, I didn't dare bring it out for fear its going to get damaged or stolen from my carelessness. I used it for work, but only at home.

  u know last yr or the yr before, dunno isit the tsunami or wat....my colleague staying in whampoa felt the tremors......wallet no take, IC no take, grab laptop and run downstairs.....
  and still trying to detect wireless so she can msn us to tell us tt her block is shaking.....

  She scare tremors will cause physical errors to her hdd mah.

  because we've 3 people in the house all using one computer, so we either need a laptop or new PC.
  2 questions :
  
  1) if we buy laptop via SIM/SMU, do they have joint-laptop programmes with laptop retailers, whereby SIM/SMU students get considerable discount?
  
  2) in schools like SIM/SMU, do subjects like Business Management(Bachelor) require heavy use of the computer?(more than 3 hours per day)
  i mean, like, maybe there's a lot of projects to be typed out etc.?
  
  need everyone's views on this.

  you buy, i buy, everyone buys a laptop, in the end, a project needs so many laptops meh?
  
  laptop is not essential, but its like a commodities..its good to have, but not necessary....well, for going online and chat with friends....
  the idea of using laptop to find info, is kind of crap because school provide pretty good workstations to be used for such purpose..
  
  its like a trend...everyone has it, so i must have one too...understand?
  depends on her mentality...

  I think so too, but if you're in a land where service centres are unheard of, you sure want to take good care of your things.

  1)
  SMU should have....NUS and NTU have.
  
  2)Courses like BA or Acc have more use for computers...its more convenient to have a laptop...but its not essential.There are computer labs around campus...just a matter of whether U want to go use it or be seen to be more "hip" with a laptop...bascially....a good thumbdrive is enough.

  SMU students uses laptops almost 80% of their time.
  Yup they have student package.

  Possible. Or get your sister's senior to get one for her.
  Each student entitled to purchase a laptop each year.

  You can take advantage of it, but only the first laptop will be licensed from school. This means that all software will be free (except the OS). The second laptop onwards, will not have such privilege, and a different OS might be loaded to save costs.

  one student oni entitled to one notebook purchase under the school notebook ownership scheme
  
  disciplinary actions can be taken against the student if the scheme is misused

  SIM has those laptop package, but not advertised in a big way, you might want to check with the Student Care Services
  
  and if your sis is going into SIM Business Management, i guess the only one would be my course, RMIT one...hurhur
  
  then i can tell you that I dont have a lappie
  
  lappie is a bonus, especially when you are doing projects at your friends' house, but its not a neccesity as we have computer labs in school

  An alternative is to buy 2nd hand one lor, the price averages $500 for P3, $900 for P4. Or can get new one, but slower processor speed like intel celeron for around $1k.

  no.only licensed OS and macromedia for mine.
