When I'm overseas...
In Hong Kong... no one asked... only when I spoke.. then You from "Taiwan ?", "Singapore" or "Malaysia"....
In Taiwan... no one bothered..
Australia - I've been asked mostly "where are you from ?" - A very fair question... it shows Aussies are exposed.
Canada - I've been asked mostly "Where are you from ?" and "Are you chinese ?"... It shows somewhat fair and the distinction starting to burr..
US - I've been asked mostly " Are you Chinese ?" or not asked at all ... It shows no distinction ... apart from racial slurs..
In Europe... a mix batch.. but mostly to them you are Asian... they respect indian descends with more respect it seems... some racial slurs esp from the french... and Germans - they tends not to talk to you.
To me ... the US is the worst.. (if you get around)....It seems, It does not matter if you're from - You are Chinese. Anything that's happen in China with regards to Sino-American relation... they tends to take it out on Asian (Even ABCs), apart from Indians.
Remember the spy plane incident, and the during the winter games... Chinese are Chinese. -

if u r chinese but from south east asia, most pple can tell u apart from chinese in PRC.
i hv to say this, it is my observation in SG. overseas chinese esp from SE Asian looks like sh*t, not that many naturally-born beautiful men and woman on the street. they are just genetically born to look rather that way (interbreeding?), i dunno how to say, but their face has oddity, either on the eyes, lips, nose, face bone or jaws. they just dont look very normal to me. or should i say, the level of aesthetic here is low. -
