Are you Chinese?

The reason why they ask if you are Chinese (meaning ethnic Chinese) is they are afraid to antagonize you.
In America, polite company requires inquirer to assume that you are AMERICAN, race/skin color/ancestral origins not-withstanding. That's why the question.
Your reply, my own personal feeling as I have posted in this forum many times is quite simply, without race qualification, SINGAPOREAN. -
And I get asked by mainlanders if I am japanese......
At least ang moh can get it right about my ethnicity -
hmm.... i m in UK.... the first time when i have to fill up some forms here, under 'Ethnicity', there are different categories.... one of which is 'Asian;.... unfortuntately, under 'Asian', I cant locate 'Chinese' or 'Southeast Asian'.... in UK, 'Asians' mean those from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.... I used to tick under 'Chinese'.... then someone told me that they will think that I am from China if I tick that (if there isnt any questions on 'Nationality' before that)... so, now, I tick 'Others'... and I put 'Singaporean Chinese'....
Long time ago, it is easy... if u r from England, u r English; u from India, u r Indian; u from China, u r Chinese.... 'ethnicity' somehow is also about where u r from.... now, with global immigration etc.... there is a difference in nationality and ethnicity.... and also, mix marriages 'complicates' the matter as well....
read an article once... a caucasian woman was asked to fill up a form in singapore.... under 'race'... she paused... and wrote 'human race'...

There are 1.3 billion Chinese, which forms the VAST majority of oriental-looking people. Compare that to the overseas Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Singaporeans etc etc...who all look the same to the rest of the world.....
Anyone who asks if you come from China is really making quite a good guess. Just look at the odds!

Thefirst time i was shocked... ISN"T it OBVIOUS that I am CHINESE!
i was alone and this guy kind just ask me that... i said "yes!". We talked and talked then after 10 mins then i realized that the guy thought I am from China!
The 2nd time i was sitting around a table with all chinese, two hongkies, one taiwanese, two mainland chinese, one ABC and me.... and this guy kind sat down..a nd then suddenly just asked "are you all chinese?"
I didn't answer... but one of the honkies said, "isn't it obvious we are all chinese?".
Again this blur f uck after a while then realized we are from all over the place.... and not just from china.
Why mainland chinese assumed that everyone is from China?
Don't they understand that Chinese is both an ethnic group and nationality??? since those damned whites in the US just put white when they're a jumbled mix of so many different caucasian and possibly asian bloods, can't we put our race as just "yellow" since technically a healthy number of us "chinese" are a mix of different dialect groups -

Most ABC are on the chubby side. In america the food portions are bloody huge unlike in canada. -

Thats why African Native from America is called African American instead of "black".
And the people from Hong Kong are called Hong Konger n not Hongkies.
