Sounds like a vascular anomaly that ruptured...cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations in the brain are rare abnormalities of blood vessels in the brain. When they rupture, the mortality is very high. Thankfully, they are rare but occasionally seen associated with conditions like polycystic kidney disease and Marfan's syndrome. Quite a number of victims tend to be very young though. The typical story is a young person who wakes up with a sudden terrible headache and lose consciousness soon after. The prognosis is very poor once the vessel has ruptured.
The difficulty with diagnosis is because these conditions tend to be silent until they rupture. The only way to diagnose them is a brain scan and angiography may be required in some cases in addition.
Some cases give a 'warning bleed' before full rupture and the only symptom is headache, especially associated with neck stiffness. However, everyone gets headache from time to time and it is not logical to scan everyone with a headache. Not only is the cost high but there are risks with the procedure as well. Rarely, some patients die from an allergic reaction to the dye used for the scan. So doctors must not bow to pressure from the ignorant public and simply scan everyone with a headache. You will kill more people that way than save the very few with this rare condition.
The management is correct in this case. Give painkillers and see if the headache goes away. If the pain is persistent as it appears to be in this case, make an appointment to see a neurologist. There is nothing in the story that indicates a dangerous vascular malformation, which is, after all, rare. Unfortunately the young man happens to be one of the very few with this condition. Had he presented with an epileptic fit, he would have had the scan immediately but no, he only had the common headache.
A non-urgent appointment to see a neurologist for persistent headache in two weeks is very reasonable. In the UK, you would be lucky to see one in 3 months' time. -

i rely much on panadol,started with taking one normal tablet, but slowly change to panadol extra, now when i got headace i need 2 tablet of panadol extra.

I was told by NKF nurses that one of the reason that a human's kidneys failed was because too much painkillers were taken. even if they themselves have headache, they won't even touch those pills still. -
Painkillers of the NSAID types...ibuprofen etc..can damage kidneys and cause renal failure. Paracetamol (panadol) is likely to cause liver failure first...don't exceed the maximum daily dosage of 8 tablets (4g).Originally posted by Nessie:Hey, that's not good for your organs!

the medication did not help. he went to TTSH. the attending doctor diagnosed a normal headache. that evening he fell into a coma. he was pronounced brain dead. taken off life support he died. the doctor said bleeding in his head caused him to lapse into coma.

last yr my mum was seriously ill.. she had already seen a 3-4 of docs but no use..things got so worse that we decided to go SGH in the middle of the night coz we really don know what to do..
while there...we had to pay $80 bucks first,after waiting for 1-2 hours..the doctor said that she will give some painkillers (she was having severe aching in her body).the thing is...we ve been to so many docs and they also prescribe painkillers..but its was no use,it didnt help her condition.so thats why we decided to seek help in the hospital.den the doctor kept sayin..oh..don worry...maybe she under too much stress
..i was like...WTF...yah...she under stress coz none of the doc could help her and she was literally half dead..den the doctor said that she will refer us to a specialist and earliest time is 2 weeks.and if we want to wait to take xray on the spot..have to wait a couple of hours.i feel like slapping that doc..how can she wait?we took some stupid-no use painkillers home again.(a waste of time,a waste of money)i paid $80 to get this kind of treatment.
the following day...we decided to go to a clinic and den we went to gleneagles specialist...we did xray..and was prescribed medicine.
after a few days...things didnt got better...we decided to do a blood test at the clinic...the next day..we also went to a gastro specialist in gleneagle.while waiting...my mum kept wanting to vomit and she cant even stand up.she was so weak that she had to be wheelchaired...the doc put her on drip and immediately did the scope later in the afternoon.
after the scope..she felt better...but was still vomiting....we went home.The next day we recieved a call from the gastro clinic that the blood test which she did that the clinic...showed that her blood paletes were very very low.had not been for this nurse...i don think the nurses at the clinic would called us to inform.
i called the clinic...and they told us to collect the report the next day.my mum was admitted immediately to TTSH.the hospital found out that she had dengue fever.By the time she was admitted to the hospital...she was alreay on the recovering stage.
when we went home after 3 nights stay...we recieved the appointment letter from SGH.telling us that our appointment had been postpone coz the doc was on leave.I was so angry..if we had waited...and not gone for the blood test..i really don know what will happened.
im also really angry that...after seeing SO many docs ..no one suggested that its dengue fever.NONE of the docs suggested a blood test.what r doctors for?in the end we had to find our own solution.
what ive learnt 1) money is really important..best is go to a private hospital for serious case coz you don have to wait and wait and wait
2) go for a blood test/body check up immediately when you r not getting better.

Think i will try not to depend on panadol too much. I never exceed the daily dosage before, but i take 2 tablets in a day too often. -
What kind of half-assed doctors did your mom went to see who couldn't identify Dengue Fever??? And I suggest next time, don't bank on SGH or whatever H to to get to root of your medical emergencies. I'm disgusted by SGH's level of efficiency. In my opnion, NEVER rely on government hospital to be expedient in an emergency if you come into their A&E in one piece and NOT dripping blood and pieces. First get pre-diagnosed by 24Hr clinic doctor, then go and demand immediate attention. If they cannot render emergency care or insists on delaying, tell them you will report to Police as a public member. If they act tough and stubborn tell them you will now go elsewhere but will proceed to lodge a Police report.
I think they are more concerned about their internal redtapes than people who come in needing medical attention. -
I know of one case, this guy felt uncomforatble, went to see doctor and the doc said that he was to take 2 panadol and rest.
Ob the way home, at the lifts, he had a heart attack and died....
so this kind of things happens...
the moral of the story is that you must have some knowledge of medical science yourself... -

Improve your knowldge of common symptoms of common illnesses, also, find a good regular GP and stick with him/her, so that the GP knows your medical history & are better able to alert you before anything gets worse and spot unfamiliar symptoms easily.
Don't hop from doctor to doctor. -

Read today's article by Chua Mui Hoong. Apparently this patient had slurred speech as well as severe headache..in that case, the doctor in question should have admitted him for further investigation. Lots of people get heaches, but slurred speech is a sign of neurological deficits and indicates something far more serious.
Guess the doctor is not very experienced.. -

yaya... we heard about EU and US tax are high. But take a example across the straits. their tax rate are quite similiar as here.
Hospital there are lousy and old but they charge cheaply so that even poor ppl will have medical treatment... reason? government is subsidies almost all the cost of salary medical personnel and medication & equipment. GH is to provide healthcare to citizen and never to make $$$ or even achieve break even.
Over here? yeah nice and beautiful hospital "world standard" but the price is also "very nice/world standard" which those who are really poor can just wait and die. -

Got headache also, GP give painkillers also, one morning wake up screaming in agony, fall into coma, died same day
