Is spending on Defence a waste of money?

SG spend billions of defence. I wonder why must SG spend so much on military hardware and all sorts of military exercise? Won't it be better to use it on something useful.
Why do people feel good that they just fired a round, a missile or something when it's all taxpayers money? Are all these exercises conducted to inflate the balls of occifers, so that they feel good wasting taxpayers money?
Why should we pay so much to the regulars when all they do is play-acting?
(I mean, not that I wish a war to happen but that's the time when they are useful, isn't it? For the rest of the time, it's mostly "bang bang bang".
People always call regulars "tan4 jiak" or "jiak leow bi" one. Perhaps, regulars can't prove others wrong.
We are also spending millions on military research. If these money were used for other research, won't it be better? -

Without a strong military to back her up in international politics, Singapore will be like a lamb to slaughter, u think the pedra branca issue would have even gone to the ICJ if SAF was non-existent?Heck no!Without a credible armed force, it'll be known as Pulau Batu Puteh today.Think Spratlys..Philippines got no chance what so ever to claim the portion they think belongs to them whereas China and Vietnam collaborated to carry out sea explorations in the Spratlys despite the ongoing dispute of who the Spratlys should belong too...the reason is clear as China can afford to send her destroyers,frigates and what not to stamp her authority there while Philippines' navy is almost non-existent!
Power is built upon military might, look at Israel, the Palestinian govt have to accede to the Israelis' demand and force Hamas to hand over the hostage, without a credible defence that can buzz Syrian presidential palace at will, u think the Hamas government will even bother to listen to what Olmert has to say? And u must remember that we have large neighbours around us who have a tendency to swallow up land near disputed borders, think sipadan and ligitan.
Waste of money? do you think that buying a lock for ur safe,which keeps all of what u have got , is a waste of money? -

You want to enjoy the safe and peaceful and stable with the help of a strong deterrent in the means of the Armed Forces? Or let yourself to be dominated, ruled and pushed around by external forces? -
Well we cannot help it , when there is a crazy doctor M just across the causeway everyday threatening to attack singapore. The reason is not to be threatened by unreasonable millitary forces outside both Singapore and Malaysian countries. simi wayang? last time british forces wayang and the japanese all the more wanted to test singapore's defense fortress....sometimes if you wayang even more...the aggressor might be more determined.
re: sg's defense
it's important but i think the defense spending could be cut down especially when the period is under abdullah (more stability)

anyone here runs your own businesses? try removing your door and front gates to your shops and see what happen. its convenient for anyone to walk in and steal your goods. try locking your gates and doors...at least it will take some effort for the thief to break in take whatever which are yours.
no need army lah...so u no need a gate and lock on your shops also...u not need any agreement with your employers when u work also since no theif will steal from u and your employers will pay u every month 1 lah. -
i agree with everyone that we need to spend on defence.
but how much is enough? are we overspending?
frankly i have a feeling that the kind of weapons we buy are mostly to elevate our status. nothing to do with the real defence. -
