Which brand is the best and most reliable?

I've been thinking of getting either Sony or Nikon, but are there any other brands which are better than these two?

Kyocera. 6 years, 3 continents, and 8 countries, and its still doing what it was made to do. Never went for servicing even once. Laughing

For best & reliable go for Canon & Nikon.

PANASONIC FX01!!

The design is PERFECT! Rounded corners. Perfect size...not so thin/small and fragile like other brands. It looks like one cool gadget..and not like one of those boring silver colored digital cameras...which is just ugly.
Functions - GREAT! 28mm wide lens. Large lcd screen. and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL - THE LEICA LENS!!! LEICA...get it?

Must see your requirements and your preferences. Different brands will have popular cameras in different ranges. Don't be so brand concious that you buy the camera for the brand, end up it is not something you want.

Go by specifications first, then design, only after then see if the brand is a brand you trust.

I personally regret not buying Olympus cameras which are water resistant. I went for a canoeing trip using a Canon camera, thinking if I minimise my usgage, I won't need to worry. Now my lens mechanism is problematic and it costs money to repair (after warranty). And all that while during the trip I was so cautious about not using my camera too much.

Sony is ok, but rather pricey for the same specifications you can get in other brands. Also, the memory card is the most expensive. If you buy Sony, make sure it's a promotion or they at least give you some decent memory card. The international warrenty is convenient as well if you're not local or if you'll be studying overseas since Sony service centres are easily available.

But sony isn't the only one with international warranty.

Nikon is pretty good for SLRs, but I figure you're into the compact type, otherwise you'd probably be posting in forums like photo gallery. I don't particularly see Nikon being popular for compact cameras and personally I find nicer designs for compact cameras in other brands.

Honestly, I feel for prosumer cameras, whether it's leica or not isn't so important. For prosumer I'd prefer it for Horizontal zoom. Which is what the Sony T series has but not the Canon Ixus series.

My advice, find someone with a compact type of camera, ask them what they like about their camera. Ask them about the specs of that camera and what those specs do for their camera.

Don't ask someone who is a die hard SLR fan (professional camera) because they tend to be quite biased.

I agree man, Kyocera is steady. Just that marketing is poor. Decent performance for its price.

Get Canon A430 or any A series. But you want to get Nikon, get L2 coolpix.
