Yeah that someone is you.Originally posted by laurence82:To add, if Buddhists can burn paper, and these are not from Buddhism, conclusively, what do we have?
Ans: Somebody playing around with words.
alright.Originally posted by laurence82:In case is the same as pre-emptive action![]()
As I said, not really anyone will associate CNY with buddhism.Originally posted by laurence82:So, if so called Buddhists burning these papers will give wrong idea about Buddhism, what do we call Buddhists who receive angpows during CNY, a folk festival and tradition?
Well, the answer is already hereOriginally posted by Cenarious:a) I only kept going on because you kept talking back.
b) It would be stupid if you thought you were doing a buddhist thing. And I have also apologised for harsh words, you probably missed it.
c) Yes, I do.
Wow, so an action can be wrong or not in line with a faith's teachings, as long as it doesnt give bad image.Originally posted by Cenarious:As I said, not really anyone will associate CNY with buddhism.
Can you stop side tracking? My personality is irrelevant here. Being angsty to bring bad image isnt the same as burning paper to offer to the dead to bring wrong understanding of buddhism. You can say that my practise is no good, yes, but the fact that buddhism doesnt teach u to burn things is a fact.Originally posted by laurence82:Well, the answer is already here
Its hard for even the most fundamental Buddhist to preach against giving wrong image, because he himself is guilty of such actions.
Thats why I said from the beginning, clean your own house first, and by these 'cleaning', I should have included, clean up your own damn act.
Again, according to you, burning paper is not in line with Buddha's teachings, and you said Buddhists can burn paper, and yet you harp on burning paper give wrong idea about Buddhism.Originally posted by Cenarious:Yeah that someone is you.
Nope, its to the core issue, which we have discussed from page two or so, so I dont know what is this thing about your personality.Originally posted by Cenarious:Can you stop side tracking? BTW I only tried meditating once and I failed.
You are a student so does that mean you cannot go arcade to play? As long as you know that playing all day in the arcade doesn't give you a bright future while studying does, you can still play in it.Originally posted by laurence82:Wow, so an action can be wrong or not in line with a faith's teachings, as long as it doesnt give bad image.
So both CNY and HGF are part of Chinese folk tradition, even Buddhists can practise it, but if it gives a bad image, it should be highlighted.
What a load of crap. Obviously, this has always been an image issue, not doctrinal issue or bad practices.![]()
People can burn paper as long as they know that this isn't from a teaching of buddhism, and don't go around saying "i was a buddhist and all we did was burned paper during the 7th month and we pray to tua pek gong too".Originally posted by laurence82:Again, according to you, burning paper is not in line with Buddha's teachings, and you said Buddhists can burn paper, and yet you harp on burning paper give wrong idea about Buddhism.
The fourth thing you should be clarifiying
People have already complained that buddhists are quietists. I can self cultivate, gain experience and merits and at the same time right a misconception that some people have, isnt that good?Originally posted by laurence82:Nope, its to the core issue, which we have discussed from page two or so, so I dont know what is this thing about your personality.
Buddhism is a faith of self cultivation, gaining experience and merits, not blatant preaching.
I hope this statement can tell you what I mean.
who are 'they'?Originally posted by Cenarious:People can burn paper as long as they know that this isn't from a teaching of buddhism, and don't go around saying "i was a buddhist and all we did was burned paper during the 7th month and we pray to tua pek gong too".
"they" can be anyone. Yes they can burn paper, provided that that dont link it to buddhism.Originally posted by laurence82:who are 'they'?
You said Buddhists can burn paper, so I assume you are saying Buddhists can burn paper even though its not in line with Buddha's teachings
Need mouth to tell? Action shows it all
Lousy analogyOriginally posted by Cenarious:You are a student so does that mean you cannot go arcade to play? As long as you know that playing all day in the arcade doesn't give you a bright future while studying does, you can still play in it.
If it gives a bad image why won't I highlight it?
You focused too much on righting misconceptionOriginally posted by Cenarious:People have already complained that buddhists are quietists. I can self cultivate, gain experience and merits and at the same time right a misconception that some people have, isnt that good?
I met many more people than what you just described, including fanatics and cults members.Originally posted by Cenarious:"they" can be anyone. Yes they can burn paper, provided that that dont link it to buddhism.
I know you haven't met a christian who converts buddhist people by saying "i was a buddhist and all we did was burn paper and pray for fortune". I just met one recently.

And whether you want to burn paper depends on yourself, too.Originally posted by laurence82:Lousy analogy
Whether students are allowed to go arcade depends on themselves, their own values, parental restrictions or even school regulations, we dont know.
But right here, there is Buddha's teachings we can rely upon for guidance.
You are encouraging a student who follow an irrational way, yet you preach against Buddhists burning paper not in line with Buddha's teachings?
And dont digress
Its clearly its an image issue, something superficial, coz as you said, as long it dont give image problem even though its wrong, its ok. Where is the 'quality' in this?
Then u should ask that person, whether he/she knows wat buddhism is all about, whether buddhist really burn paper and pray for fortune, and why convert to christian.Originally posted by Cenarious:"they" can be anyone. Yes they can burn paper, provided that that dont link it to buddhism.
