tortoises grow up to be mean and nasty things.. especially the red-eared sliders or terrapins... they live for many years and grow up pretty dangerous... and please do not abandon them in drains and ponds because they will attack the native fish and other things in the drains and ponds...
if the children have no allergies, dwarf hamsters are good but only when you get the hamsters very young and handle them often... choosing the correct bedding will help reduce the smell from them to a minimum.. they are also cute and very low maintenance... get one (they're pretty happy by themselves) else you'll get a lot of fighting between hamsters and if they breed, you'll have about 40 hamsters at the end of the year...
fish are also good.. but cleaning the tank may throw out your back and it's VERY messy.. unless you get a fighting fish or betta.. they're tough and pretty.. and very low maintenance as you can rear them in a small jar...
dogs are the HIGH maintenance pets as they will require daily playing, walking and regular grooming.. they also tend to seek attention..
cats are lower maintenance and you can let them do their stuff and do not require daily walking... just regular feeding, a litter box, a food bowl, a water bowl and a scratching post will suffice...
rabbits are delightful pets.. but they are pretty high maintenance as in the beginning, if you get one as a pup, you have to keep it with you in very close proximity so that it'll recognise your scent and sound... after that, train it as if you would a dog.. it may require some specialised preparation in the house if you want to allow it to wander around the house.. wires must be armoured because rabbits tend to chew on electrical wires.. ditto house plants...
standard sized hamsters and guinea pigs are also very cute but in the absence of a garden and lawn, they will make the place kinda stinky...
any other suggestions for pets?
