Giving pets to children as birthday present

Used to keep mice. entertaining little critters, possess excellent and amusing tightrope walking skills... low maintenance too - just gotta pay for the basic setup (cage & wheel), then give regular food, drink, litter. Only downside is that u gotta clean the cage out at least once a week.. i mean like reaaally give it a good wash. Mouse pee stinks. Oh, and they breed really fast too so don't mix the sexes. I had 2 male, 2 female mice.. within 1 mth I ended up with 23 mice. -_____- sold them to close friends.
Singapore banned them because they're classified as "pests".

I still think about my 2 lost pet rabbits once in a while...
had them when I was a kid...my dad even custom-built a "house" for them...even though I dont think I treated them well...well in the sense that I didnt know how to carry an animal and ended up transporting them around the house by the ear...ouch... -
I don't really think that you should give pets as presents for children. Most children have short attention span and they change their interests fast. Probably like what the others said, get a tamagotchi or something like that.

i think can try giving cockcroach.
1) can train his speed as cockcroach run fast and when u try to catch it you gotto be faster.
2) even he don't want play liao, can just kill it. no hard feeling. no mercy. no sympathy.
