Defending doesn't mean that you have to die for it.
Constructing a building doesn't mean the workers gets killed coz of accidents, we stop all the work and abandon the construction.
Why we really do have NS is due to deterrence effect. Its part of Nation building and to be able to mobilise an effective Nation to come to the Nation's Defence and building this needs people.
We cannot own our home unless we are responsible for it .
$$$ cannot buy you a Nation. It buys you the house but the people in it needs you to be responsible for them. -

I sympathise with those who went thru tough training and cannot take it.
But if I have a son, I will want him to serve NS. Yes, it is tough and to some extent dangerous. But it does teach useful stuff that I may not be able to teach like surviving skills, discipline, physical fitness etc.
Somemore got allowance. ... Govt pay your son/bro to train him something. -

Now here's another problem... We CHOSE to call this place home and this place has ALLOWED us to make it home...
The Palestinians choose to call the Gaza Strip and West Bank HOME too... How come they haven't always been able to MAKE it home???
How come, HOME to many Palestinians, is a squalid refugee camp in Jordan?

and I wonder.. how many of those Singaporeans who migrate to the States or Australia, actually volunteer to serve in the National Guard or Territorial Reserves on weekends..
hmm.. I've always believed that if you migrate somewhere and are granted citizenship, the very least you could do is to give back a little to that community. -

You could be pretty bitter about it, adopt a heck care attitude and just avoid all responsibilities, arrows, duties etc. Generally you become invisible until the day you ORD aka "Serve and f*** off". Although there is a high chance you might sabo your friends since they might take the flake and become a general ass while in there.
Or you could see it in a different light. Instead of letting it get to you, you could use it as a motivating factor to do well in the future and avoid getting a job in the government sector. Or if you genuinely want to serve the country, work towards getting into a position where you make a change.
I was in the former group and after I orded I wished I was the latter. -

I have personally encountered a few handful of them. Ya, rich kids! They are so lucky, but I won't say that for their parents. Each of them costs the parents a few thousand dollars consulting Neurologists, ENT, Dermatologists, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology... any specialists you can think of, they have already consulted. I wonder whether they got see gynae or not since they are such a sissy. LOL
