Acuvue contact lenses are the best selling brand in singapore... Due to J&J's strong marketing arm they have captured more than 50% of the singapore market share.
To be fair, their lenses are not bad... and rather comfortable too cos of its softness. But they became the best selling not because of its quality but more rather mainly due to their marketing strategy.
It is probably the only lens brand company that give optical shops lots of free trial lenses including the starter kits, which has a bottle of solution and a CL case inside it. Other brands are not that aggressive. There marketing strategy doesn't stop here... It also have the advertising part.
They also are willing to spend lots of money on advertising... Newspapers, pamphlets, joint promotion stands in shopping malls, etc... I have help a friend with his company's promotion pamphlets before (Optical chain shop). The rough cost to print and send these pamphlets are about $55,000 for 100,000 copies (depends on paper quality also & artwork) and i was surprise the optical shop didn't pay a cent at all. In the end, the cost are cover by the sponsors that appear in the pamphlets and there may still be some extra $ left after accumulating for a few sponsors.
Even in Newspapers or Magazines also, tho there may be an optical company name there but its all these product brands like J&J that pays the bill. Of course, the company must be of some size and also give them good sale otherwise they won't pay for you...
One reason why if you walk into an optical shop and ask for disposable lenses, chances are that the sale person will recommend acuvue is probably they have shock on stand-by. Cos it is not easy for shops to keep stocks of different brands of lenses from -1.00 to -9.00 degrees. So it won't be uncommon to see shops stock-up very well with acuvue. Partly also because its popular, many people use it nowadays due to the recommendation by sales people over the years to first time users.
And also probably J&J's good credit terms...
