hmmm...according my frend, wad u said is partially rite...punishments are used onli in extreme situations or if they are used for minor offences, shld/can not be too harsh or painful...tats y whenever she made students stand tiptoe, she is careful not to make them stand for too long and she onli does tat if the student/s was/were very bad...

well, u shld try telling that to my frend's bro who was punished by our tutor back then...our tutor gave him the privilege to stand normally at attention for abt one and a half hrs...i am sure he didnt appreciate that privilege at all...in fact, he complained at the end of the lesson that his legs were very tired and painful and that was still the case when he woke up the next morning...

not realli leh...even during my time when punishments were readily allowed, teachers do keep track of the duration...for my female frend, she definitely would keep track of the duration whnever she punished her students...i guess whether or not the punishment last for whole lesson depends on the nature of the punishment. surely u cun expect a student to kneel wif legs at 90 degrees for one and a half hrs...tat wun be punishment anymore, it will be physical abuse/torture...

haha..anyway, both my female frend n myself agree that school discipline nowadays have dropped drastically compared to during our time...i still remember when we were in school, our teachers were not so restricted when it came to giving out punishments...in fact i remember that they were allowed to give any kind of punishment as long it didnt cost injuries or did not cause physical abuse...
an example of the above would be my chinese teacher in pri 1...this was more than 20yrs ago alredi...she belonged to the older generation of teachers who believed tat punishments were needed to teach n guide students...i remember that most of her students were fearful of her as she nvr had any qualms abt punishing us. she had a wide range of punishments and we nvr knew how she would punish us...
i remember how scared we would be whenever she asked any of us a qn...she had the habit of doing tat at the start of most lessons...she would randomly pick students to answer qns on the previous lesson. we were expected to revise our work after every lesson and students who couldnt answer the qns correctly would be punished. there were 2 common punishments she would give for this. she would scold the student for not revising his work and then order him to stand at a corner in front of the class and either 1) hold up his textbook above his head, keeping his arms straight up or 2) stand at a corner in front of class wif textbook balanced on top of his head. For both cases, the student had to maintain the respective positions until the teacher released him. as primary one kids, we obeyed her out of fear and dared not slack during punishments, fearing that she would punish us even more if we did...
needless to say, there were times where u can find several students being punished tgr for not answering her qns correctly...in such cases, they would stand along both sides of the blackboard, either holding up their textbooks or balancing them on their heads. the teacher would proceed wif the lesson. i was a victim of such a few times tat yr and i remember that my arms felt quite tired after the punishment...
if this teacher lived in the modern generation, i wonder if she would still keep her job...

haha, i think balancing the book on the head will be much more relaxing then holding the book above the head. are the students given a chance to choose the punishment?
to snoopy81:
it depends. in average i would say abt 15mins...we were in primary 1 then so we did not have the energy to endure the punishment for very long...although she was very strict, she was still humane to consider this and usually would not punish us beyond wad we could bear...still it was tiring holding up our textbks for 10-15mins, bearing in mind that we had to keep our hands straight up thru out...my primary school was an all boys' school so that may explain y the teachers we had were stricter...thankfully for me, i onli studied there 4 2 yrs...i transferred to a mixed school at the end of pri 2...

no, we were not allowed to choose our punishment. in fact, having the privilege to choose was extremely rare during my time. it did occur b4 in pri 3-4 when i had tat nice, caring teacher as my form teacher. she would let us choose btw being punished or to be obedient to her warnings...

i dunno which is worse cos i have nvr tried the tip-toe punishment b4...i believe both punishments have their fair share of pain and tiredness...however, the diff is my female doesnt punish her students often compared to my chinese teacher back then who punished us almost on a daily basis...we were onli in primary one then so were ignorant to wad we shld/shld not do in school...our teacher would punish us for almost any offence, whether small or big and her punishments varied greatly from case to case...

hey snoopy81, since u said that teachers nowadays are not allowed to punish students like in the past...why is it that ur female frend whom u mentioned in a much earlier post was allowed to make 5 students stand on chair outside the classroom when she did relief teaching?

Chasing the student out of the class is the most ineffective punishment. It isn't even a punishment at all actually - the student gets the privilege of having his own private space along the corridor, and he doesn't have to even pretend that he is listening to whatever the teacher is saying.
Worst of all is when a student gets sent out of the class for forgetting his/her materials/text/whatever. It merely serves to deny the student the right to learn. But this applies to all punishments that seeks to cause physical strain which causes them to lose their mental concentration.
