STOMP's registration requirements

Out of curiousity, i visited the STOMP website to review their forum pages.
Their registration process requires, among the usual things, your mobile number.
First thing that struck me: why would you need a user's mobile number?
Then as i read the terms and conditions (below), it became clear:
You agree that the information provided in the registration form may be used for the following purposes:
(a) To provide goods and services by SPH or its designated representatives and/or business partners to you or parties designated by you and matters ancillary thereto
(b) To verify and process payment when you purchase goods and services from our sites
(c) For verification and record of your personal particulars including comparing it with information from other sources and using the information to communicate with you
(d) To conduct statistical analysis of the users of our sites including the number of users, the frequency of use, profile of users and using such analysis for our business plans, the enhancement of our products and services, targeted advertisements and conveying such information in broad terms (but not information in relation to specific individuals) to third parties who have or propose to have business dealings with us
(e) To send you information, promotions and updates including marketing and advertising materials in relation to our goods and services and those of third party organizations selected by us
(f) To comply with any order of court or directive from authorities investigating any alleged offence, misdeeds and/or abuse or for the purposes of taking legal action against any users for breach of the Conditions of Access and/or Terms of Service
(g) For the above purposes by third parties (who may be based outside Singapore) who offer goods and services or sponsor contests or other promotional programs on our site, whether in conjunction with us or not, if you purchase such goods, use such services or participate in such contests and promotional programs.
We send a regular email newsletter to our members to keep them informed about new services and promotions. By agreeing to these terms of service, you agree to receive this regular newsletter.
In short, by signing on, verification of your handphone number is required. This subsequently leads to the use of your contact information to perform various surveys (not spelled out but the implication from the term 'statistics' is obvious), offer your information to 'approved' 3rd parties for soliciting purchases, offers and other promotional programs....and all just for signing up with STOMP to interact in their forum pages.
What kind of exposure are we talking about by agreeing to this? dwang...

That's why I dun want a Stomp account.
I value my privacy.
I dun want someone to call me in the middle of the night advertising something. Yes, I know I can off my phone but that's another matter. -

just put any number also can register... think the hp part they don't really check one lah. they only sent email to you and not sms you. can also use the same number several times.

Very simple what.. stay away from the website and don't join or agree to any of their TERMS.

This, sort of says that no rubbish is entertained on STOMP. In other words, if you post anything defamatory, anything racist or bad about other religions, break copyright laws etc, lawyer letters might be arriving your house soon.
Freedom of speech indeed.

STOMP is an attempt to "liberalise" the climate of free speech, to make this govt appear more vibrant and open minded. 50 years down the road, LHL would want his reign to be remembered as one that is "modern and in touch with the times". Agree?

freedoms come with a responsibility...
as much as i do not trust the idiots in power with information like this, where does freedoms without responsibility lead us...
anonymity may bring out the honest views.. however, how many are responsible enough to stand for what they say?
how many have the guts to put your hand up and say "yeah! i said that!" when big brother comes?
if people have the courage to stand by their words, no matter what kind of registration, or whatever, doesn't matter..
that being said, i would think that BOTH sides, the gabrament and the people have to be heck of a lot more mature.. because these freedoms come with a huge price.. -

We have a right to privacy and this right should not be tossed about like a salad.
Stomp is an act of co-option, steepened in the hallowed art of capitalist spin to attract people to them. Personally, anything dealt with money together with information creation, is not a good idea. -

But privacy, it's a separate issue. I understand that it'll be easier to trace, but this idea really puts me off. It should be like the spam laws, optional to put in our numbers.

btw, notice that sgforums has not been on the inbox section of the sunday times for a while...mostly hogged by delphi, HWZ and most recently....STOMP. -
perhaps we need to reflect on the quality of our threads also...
well, not tt we get paid or wat for getting featured.
we can be happy being our own little community w/o the "free advertising" or media coverage.... -
Technically, the quality of those threads posted on the papers aren't good either, yet they are still published.

we dun have to be afraid of competition or lack of exposure......
we used to be on tv and papers for the wrong reasons......esp the sggirls side.......
