You get that lots from people there. The bus driver, the check-out girl or stranger on the street.Originally posted by Gedanken:I must be extremely lucky. Europe, US and Australia for the past 12 years and not a single incident.
Just this afternoon, I nicked outside a shopping arcade for a smoke while I was waiting for my takeaway, and I struck up a nice conversation with an old bloke who'd quit BP to become an artist.
I'd disagree with the "How are you" thing. Many a time I've said, "Good, thanks - and you?" and ended up chatting for the next half hour or so.
The closest I've ever been to such a situation is when a young lass came up to me and said, "Ni hao ma?". I replied, "Yeah, I'm all right - how ya goin'?". She looked puzzled and walked away. Go figure.
*shrugs* Ah well, you may as well whine about it here. I expect other people out there will be too busy having fun or just having lives to worry about paying attention to you.Originally posted by valentinoo:i dunno why singaporeans like to suck up to caucasions...if u go to their country, they r just like us...some ppoor some rich..some begs...some do bangla kind of jobs....they r no big shots man...i seen lotsa locals act so high class when they go out with their ang moh friends...pui
Ah, thanks for shedding light on that one. I had once idly wondered what the rejects chanted to help themselves sleep at night.Originally posted by Anycall:I guess caucasians just love having asians sucking up to them and talking with their slangs. What's the purpose or function of worrying about this?Originally posted by Croaking_Toad:But who knows deep down what they think of us???
i saw this everyday on the streetOriginally posted by valentinoo:i dunno why singaporeans like to suck up to caucasions...if u go to their country, they r just like us...some ppoor some rich..some begs...some do bangla kind of jobs....they r no big shots man...i seen lotsa locals act so high class when they go out with their ang moh friends...pui
No problemOriginally posted by Gedanken:Ah, thanks for shedding light on that one. I had once idly wondered what the rejects chanted to help themselves sleep at night.
Your guess is as good as mine - have seen any of those.Originally posted by Anycall:No problemI guess the same applies to those who think believe by intergrating themselves with caucasians, talking with the "slang" , acting like they are white, will actually make them better than any other asians

Out of curiosity, how many of us here prefer to see the above here in sg? Or the majority of sulky people we see on the mrt and buses each day?Originally posted by Croaking_Toad:You get that lots from people there. The bus driver, the check-out girl or stranger on the street.
Usually goes like this....
"How ya going?" or "G'day"
Standard reply: "Good thanks, yourself?"
It's in their culture. And for us, they do appear friendly. But who knows deep down what they think of us???
if u do that to a guy, they'd think you're gay.Originally posted by Croaking_Toad:Out of curiosity, how many of us here prefer to see the above here in sg? Or the majority of sulky people we see on the mrt and buses each day?
One would get weird and funny looks from people if we were to go up to a stranger and wishing them 'good day'. What say all of you?
we take everything for granted, behave like kings in a society we have never even helped to contribute to. rich people are like that, they think they're the top of the world. shame on singapore!!Originally posted by LazerLordz:because by and large, Singaporean society is full of self-absorbed pricks who were never taught to be well-mannered or even say thanks after a stranger helps them with the lift door or anything.
You can't change parentage, but you can make sure you don't commit that same mistake with your kids.
When you have sufficiently travelled around, you will see that our behavior is quite common to societies who have gained wealth overnight. The curse of the noveau riche if you wanna call it that.
oh noos ..... we're cursed then ! ....Originally posted by LazerLordz:because by and large, Singaporean society is full of self-absorbed pricks who were never taught to be well-mannered or even say thanks after a stranger helps them with the lift door or anything.

Extremely true...singapore girls are so narrow minded and always thinking that if a stranger guy comes n talk to u, he is trying to pick u up and ask u to be his gf etc...Originally posted by zer0kool:if u do that to a guy, they'd think you're gay.
If u do that to a girl, she'd think u are picking her up.
Sg is full of ---- la
The trouble is, too many local guys have these intentions.Originally posted by JuanRomanRiquelme:\Extremely true...singapore girls are so narrow minded and always thinking that if a stranger guy comes n talk to u, he is trying to pick u up and ask u to be his gf etc...
Yes, but isn't their mating call, "Miss, can I know you?"?Originally posted by Kuali Baba:The trouble is, too many local guys have these intentions.![]()
