Why I went overseas to study

I have always emphasize the difference between our university and those overseas. I told my friends that NUS and NTU will never make it to the elites simply because they are solely result orientated that they lose their focus on cultivating undergrads.
To the local university, the place is like a assembly line moulding every man and woman into a degree holder. In overseas university, you learn to research and question. In lectures and tutorials, the interactions are spontaneous. You grill the lecturers and tutors to get different opinions and new area of knowledge. In local university, it is sadly only one way communication most of the time.
That is why I always believe our local university will never discover a John Nash or any nobel prize winner, simply because we are churning out a bunch of knowledge administrators rather than a bunch of thinkers. During my time, my school mates and I jointly tried to crack a few old unsolved mathematics formulas with some success. Unfortunately for me, I've to return back to singapore at that time and stopped my research on thermothology physonosis theory. It's a pity as nobody came close to it, not even John Nash. -
in other words, NTU and NUS cannot make it lah.
But got a quite a number of overseas student coming here to study leh, especial those from chiiiiina -
i want to study graphics design overseas.
but its impossible.

AS much as they want local unis to be like foriegn unis, local students are just too moulded since Sec Sch and JC/Poly.

if you can qualify for a local university but choose to go overseas then you have the right to talk, if u cant qualify here and have to go overseas just because you cant make it then you're a loser. seriously.

my overseas grad friends are doing fine now. these are the same people who almost went normal stream back then. -
even if i qualify for a local university, i'll still consider goin overseas to study

chiina ppl also heading to Finland, Sweden, Germany.. since it is free or close to free there. -
I study in a prestigious overseas university and I can tell you what you said is fucking bullshit. where did you get that idea from, hollywood movies? Lectures are called Lectures for a reason, I dont pay fucking thousands of dollars to listen to some random people in my class talk, I want to listen to the professor and just the professor because he is the one thats supposed to teach. don't be myopic on those who go foreign unis just because they can't qualify locally. otherwise, this thread is becoming a laughing stock and anymore discussion on this point is worthless.

i might not be studying uni but i have being into nus at least couple of times of talks etc..
maybe some part of what you said is correct bout one way communication.
but if you're in the lecture hall with a lot of mixtures of different contries, than it's different.
3 times i went there, there was quite a lot of 2 way communication due to a lot of mixtures of students from different countries.
If nus and ntu isn't that good?
why is NUS in the TOP 10 Universities in the World followed by NTU in the Top 50s?
To a certain degree, i agree and disagree with you.
Agree on the overseas uni is better as in social environment - get to mix a lot
Disagree on the one way communication. Perhaps it depends on your luck to let you have a good environment in local unis. -
I think for all of you who have been to any universities....
you all know, there is no SURE and FAIR way to rate a university.
so to me.. i really reject the "World Ranking" system because they are based on the universities' history and capability than anything else. -
the threadstarter has probably not been to university before. like one of the above post states: a lecture is a bloody lecture. it is where u sit down and listen to the lecturer teach. it is not a tutorial or debate session where u argue over anything, probably no university in the world will have a debate session take over a lecture, it is overly time consuming and unfair to your fellow students who have paid good money and come to learn at these lectures not to hear some self-righteous idiot hit back at the lecturer every minute. agree with ponders, probably only in places like singapore or asia do u get nonsense like rankings. there's no common basis on which to rank different schools each having their niche areas unless its like singapore where they all offer the same subjects
