To the local university, the place is like a assembly line moulding every man and woman into a degree holder. In overseas university, you learn to research and question. In lectures and tutorials, the interactions are spontaneous. You grill the lecturers and tutors to get different opinions and new area of knowledge. In local university, it is sadly only one way communication most of the time.
That is why I always believe our local university will never discover a John Nash or any nobel prize winner, simply because we are churning out a bunch of knowledge administrators rather than a bunch of thinkers. During my time, my school mates and I jointly tried to crack a few old unsolved mathematics formulas with some success. Unfortunately for me, I've to return back to singapore at that time and stopped my research on thermothology physonosis theory. It's a pity as nobody came close to it, not even John Nash.
Exactly.. theres no absolute sure way of rating a university. I am from NUS and I still find it funny when peeps refer to us as top 20 universityOriginally posted by Ponders:I think for all of you who have been to any universities....
you all know, there is no SURE and FAIR way to rate a university.
so to me.. i really reject the "World Ranking" system because they are based on the universities' history and capability than anything else.

Lectures are called Lectures for a reason, I dont pay fucking thousands of dollars to listen to some random people in my class talk, I want to listen to the professor and just the professor because he is the one thats supposed to teach. I dont know about useless crap like "political studies" or "history" but thats the case for me because I study real stuff.
Some crap that the threadstarter and his frens thought of during lectures... instead of listening to the lecturer....Originally posted by Illegal Operation:"thermothology physonosis" are you sure you got this correct? What is this?
where'd u get this perfect picture from? University of Fairyland, School of Fantasies?Originally posted by caramon.:Thank you for giving us the perfect example. Yes, to local universities all the professors are correct. " To err is human" is thrown out of the window in local students context. We engage in conversations thus everyone learns. We practise creativeness and explore different ideas instead of just hitting on the books.
Like a greatness(caramon) once said: Everyone is capable of following instructions and doing it well after a few try but will not learn and improve out of the situation.
So true and so sad...Originally posted by nonameguy:The Singapore government has no interest in creating the next John Nash or any nobel prize winner anyway........... all they want are a bunch of engineers to do **** job for the foreign companies. So your complain is not very relevant.
get out of Kent Ridge, you are making a fool out of the rest of us.Originally posted by NUS_Superst@r:I no money to go overseas uni. that's why i am stuck in NUS. *Sobs* *Sobs*

i have friends who went to cambridge and yale and they say its just as stressful, if not more stressful than singapore schools. you're going to university to study, not going to a fun creative church camp

Originally posted by caramon.:Yeah, that's why I said that your complain is irrelevant. Singapore society does not demand someone who is going to win a nobel prize, it demands someone who can do calculations and maintanance for those foreign companies.
I never realised what is the meaning of university until I am in overseas. A place where students are allow to explore their own interest whether in academic, sports, music, performance arts or even physio therapy etc etc. All these are unheard of in Singapore where you just follows what's given to you.
You strictly adheres to the rules or they failed you for incompliance.
What we need is an open mindset and a willingness to learn. Real education does not simply mean being able to solve your math or getting your first class degree by hard reading, but the ability to accommodate and integrate oneself into the real society when the needs or situation warrants.
Its not a career determinant or even a measure of potential.
Asian Society? I think it's a bit generalized here. The world is becoming individualistic. So it doesn't matter where you go, you're going to be treated the same way. It all begins by how you treat others and the attitude you carry around. That will make a difference though.Originally posted by Wega007:For those that did LAW (need to pass Bar exam in SG) or MEDICINE.
thats a different story.
Utimately no one really measure your success.
if U want to make yourself feel good.. Go ahead.
Asian Society can always find person A trying to find ways to look down person B.
Alots of comparison going around.
A lecture is a lecture. That's true. You don't go around debating stuffs and arguing over things taught, but you listen to the lecturer that's all you can do.Originally posted by vito_corleone:the threadstarter has probably not been to university before. like one of the above post states: a lecture is a bloody lecture. it is where u sit down and listen to the lecturer teach. it is not a tutorial or debate session where u argue over anything, probably no university in the world will have a debate session take over a lecture, it is overly time consuming and unfair to your fellow students who have paid good money and come to learn at these lectures not to hear some self-righteous idiot hit back at the lecturer every minute.![]()
agree with ponders, probably only in places like singapore or asia do u get nonsense like rankings. there's no common basis on which to rank different schools each having their niche areas unless its like singapore where they all offer the same subjects
