We all live our lives in our own way. And even if a lot of people own condos, terraces and big cars, that may be just a show. Perhaps if they disclose their bank accounts, one may get a shock.

just like some "elites" who considered themselves as the creme of the coup, compared those lower class than them as inferior to the coup. They jolly well don't forget, the middle income earners' taxes plays a part in some of their scholarships too. -

if you guys want to know basic starting pay of polys and unis can buy carreer guide book 2006 for more reference. -
Hope that I'm wrong, base on yr stat is starting pay but base on overall workforce the amount is different. The best info is from IRAS as they reflect on overall income in a yr. A person basic can be $600 but the overall is $100k base on comm as a car sale exe.

GDP is not the right indicator for average salary.

To know.. let us post our monthly average salary over a year then we compare. And see what the average salary of Singaporeans.
I start first.. I earning very little about 1.2k nia.

This seems to be the entry-level salary range of non-managerial staff (basic) .. they're based on feedback from friends, family and my own experience so it may not be entirely accurate :
O levels : $800-$1.3k
A levels/Dip : $1.2k-1.8k
Degree : $1.5k-2.6k
- Call centre jobs tend to pay more (basic). Jobs that require overnight shift / 3rd language abilities tend to pay 20% more (basic).
- Average salary range is subjective to industry / company
- Job advancement/pay increment is HIGHLY dependent on your paper qualifications, even if you've exhibited a personal capacity / performance that is on par with, or even surpasses, degree holders. So much for meritocracy!!
- Managers (not incl supervisors) tend to earn 2-10 times more than their underlings depending on their position. There appears to be quite an imbalance of salary here.. Our salaries today aren't much better from 10 years ago. Therefore it would be stretching the truth to say that Singaporeans today are wealthier.
So yeah, like some forumers have said, the "average salary" says almost nothing. If we could get a real breakdown of the figures on the respective positions / industries, we'd get a much clearer picture.. because "Average" is very subjective... -
I only earn 1.6k... so little... how to survive.. I don't think is a MUST for family to own a car..

There's a formula that derives from GDP to get the average salary. Ask any business student to see if they know. I'm not a business student so I don't know how to calculate. Someone mentioned above that $4.5k/mth is top ten % already, alright so be it. I won't be surprised.

Some people earn $5k and drive a BMW 3 Series. Show off and living beyond his means? Some earn $10,000 and drive a 7 series? Show off and living beyond his means too?
It definitely seems so to me. -
an average salary of supposingly $5k may not be truly reflective. let's say just one person himself draws a higher salary of multi-fold difference from the rest, he is able to bring up the average by a huge (deceiving) margin just by himself, whereas the majority is in reality drawing at a much lower rate.
when i studied econs, i learnt abt this progressive income tax (earn more tax more) which is designed to narrow the income gap. without it, you can imagine how much it could be worse. -
Drive big cars, live big apartments and spent extravangrantly.. but in the end no savings in bank, no money buy insurance. Incurred big debts to bank. It is just a matter of living within your means and spending prudently. A 7 seater MPV is cheaper and better than a mercedes or BMW. Living in a Condo is better than living in a semi-detached.
Unless you really can well afford it then go for the very best, like you are earning million in a month. -
I think if you add the lowest income and highest income the average pay of singaporean or people living in singapore is 2k - 2.5k ~

Abit confused as I get older.
When I was in a secondary sch, (an [b]elite one ), my dad earning about $3.5k is considered poor. All my friends lived in condominiums, terrace houses etc.
When I reached JC, I was considered average.
When I reach Uni, I realise how blessed I am. My family has an eight-seater car whereas loads of my friends' dads dont have cars.
Frankly, I was quite surprised...after being used to ppl being rich in my sec sch and JC days, I came to think that it is a NORM, in fact, a MUST for families to have cars. In fact, average cars make me feel claustrophobic, thanks to being used to my dad's eight-seater.

I study in an elite school and I have observed that 3/4 of my classmates live in private property. Really stunning reality indeed. At one point of time, I was one of the only few whose address begins with 'Blk blah blah blah'. LOL
My total household income is about 2k. I live in a middle class surburban neighbourhood and my father does not own a car, but for decades we managed to be self-sufficient through tight budgets and savings. Yet I do not feel any stigma whatsoever, in fact I feel privileged to be studying among the best and elites. I have got acquainted with filthy rich kids (parents are owners/directors of firms, MPs, ministers, lawyers, doctors, professionals) who are also really wonderful people at heart. My circle of friends range from all socio-economic backgrounds (those who live in spartan two room flat conditions to those whose parents have properties overseas) I think I am fortunate to such an experience haha
