u noe why? cos our lan jiao ministers and MP's earn so much that it drives the average upwardsOriginally posted by Jerina:Wow...average salary is nearly 5k. But many ppl earn so much less...hmm.
I really do not think that is why the progressive income tax system is what it is today. Its more a case of we can't tax you too much because you already do not have much, than anything else. Hence, in singapore, we have quite a generous tax-free bracket. After all, the highest tax is really not that high.Originally posted by Theatre Of Dreams:an average salary of supposingly $5k may not be truly reflective. let's say just one person himself draws a higher salary of multi-fold difference from the rest, he is able to bring up the average by a huge (deceiving) margin just by himself, whereas the majority is in reality drawing at a much lower rate.
when i studied econs, i learnt abt this progressive income tax (earn more tax more) which is designed to narrow the income gap. without it, you can imagine how much it could be worse.
I definitely agree that SAVINGS is all important, something our generation should really learn. Then again, with the rising standard of living, even if you do earn $2.5k, it can be hard to save some decent money.Originally posted by No9:its more impt to noe how to save/invest den earning big bucks.
singaporeans have the 'they have a small head but they want a big hat syndrome'.
I know of so-called 'young yuppies' that have great jobs that pay them ard 3-4k and they are not even 25yrs old. but what they do with the money??some will go for shopping therapy on payday every end of the month and spend half their salary in a day. some drive cars that Evos n DC5s that make us drool, only to recieve reminders for payment every other month. The only savings they have is probably a few measly thousands and whatever is in their CPF.
A relative of mine works as a child-care teacher and probably takes home less than 2k a mth. But she has a 6 figure sum sitting in her POSB savings acct.
Its impt to earn big bucks, but its more impt to noe how to 'keep' it.
Cheers~~![]()

if u think u cannot achieve something, that does not mean everyone must be like you. When it comes to $$$, self-discipline means alot. I am not an expert in finance, i m juz lucky to have people ard me reminding me that any tin-can that has 4 wheels and can move is a gd car..and its stupid to pay interest for all the stupid loans u can think of, except for education of cus.
Well self discipline...some people have it, some people don't.![]()

You can save. Yippeee. Big deal. Grow up and understand that not everyone has the same priorities as you. Some want to build a nest egg, others want to have a blast. Neither is better than the other.![]()
savings is never good enough unless you have few committments and earns a handsome salary.Originally posted by -[0]-:I think saving is important.
I also think that knowing what to spend on is important.
However, some of us have debts, installments and other mortgages to pay up. It might take like a life time to do so. How are we going to save up a decent amount when some of us yet to pay up some stuffs?
And our average pay is so low compared to the standard of living here. Working overtime is like the only way some of us can earn more money.
Save?
why are u in debts in the first place?Originally posted by -[0]-:I think saving is important.
