I was advised by my relative living there not to wear my gold necklace when I go to JB

Depends on where you go.. if you go genting, will you still think the food is cheap?

Anyway as a frequent traveller to our neighbour, I feel Malaysia is quite safe.. Just dun flash around money or act like you r bloody visitor then i thnk its fine.
Dun go out late at night and be with relatives or friends who r malaysian, who know the places to avoid. So far i never met any crimes while there although i met people who drabbed in drugs. Be in a Malaysian registered car also help alot..
Just be more cautious while there.. it helps alot.. the above tips also..

When I got the chance then I make a passport

My family drives to KL at least once a year. Very safe, start early 7am+, reach in 3 1/2 hrs. Just get $50 ringgit ready in case we get fined for speeding.
Shopping is great esp Megamall, Times Sq, etc we buy lots of clothings & shoes. We normally park in the hotel & take cabs everywhere cos it is cheap.
My relatives stay in a condo there & security is very good. They have been living there for a few years & so far so good -
