On the brighter side, the "undeveloped" parts of China still retains the same look and atmosphere as the past. Life is simple, and people there are also less materialistic and more honest.
You look at Beijing. The government is tearing down old historical houses to build high-rise buildings. The roads are choked with traffic, and there is this constant haze that lingers around in the city. This is the product of progress and development...

Some parts of China are resistant to changes, because the people are scared that their own identity and heritage is destroyed by development and globalisation. For example, the Chinese government sees the completion of the railway to Tibet as an acheivement, but the Tibetian people are worried that their own culture will be diluted and lost when Tibet becomes much more accessible...
