How many dialects do you master & use in your daily life?

I think dialect is dividing people and causes disunity in the long run. That why government is trying to encourage people not to learn it. Like Qin Shi Huang trying to unite the writing of chinese by standardising into one way of writing. Agree?

i understand a bit cantonese, a little hokkien, a little tamil and all malay dialects

i get irritated when ppl, young speak hokkien or whatever.
to me its like they think their cool or whatever they think it is, they think that their better or something cause they can speak some dialect.
but it only applies to juvenile ppl i come across.
but for the older generations i think its perfectly fine. but i believe dialects would die down as the years pass by -

if you are with a group of people who speak cantonese you will learn that dialect in order to participate in the conversation. or you can all speak another language that everyone understands.
such situations are not uncommon. -

Just switch on your radio and listen to Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka news broadcast, those dialects are elegant and super as well.

Some Chinese dialects have more speakers than other European or Asian languages. Take Cantonese for example. There are around 70 million Cantonese speakers worldwide. That's more than the number of Polish speakers, or Turkish speakers, or Italian speakers! Even Hokkien, with around 45 million speakers, has more speakers than Thai, Indonesian or Malay globally... I was born in HK, so Cantonese is my mother tongue. I'm proud to know Cantonese because it's a fascinating language. (The word "ketchup" comes from the Cantonese word "ke chup".) However, it is not easy to master Cantonese, as it has 9 tones compared to Mandarin's 4 tones, and it has some words and expressions that are not found in other dialects. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant surprise to hear Cantonese when I go to the Chinatowns of other cities (e.g. London, Vancouver, San Francisco, etc). In fact, Cantonese is so common in Vancouver that people are calling the city "Hong-kouver"... Haha...
At home I speak Cantonese. Outside I speak Mandarin & English. Too bad I dunno any Hokkien... The only Hokkien I know are the vulgarities used in the army... Haha...
