I'm not saying that what the guy did was right. You should not use someone else's wireless network without their permission, and indeed, to post a bomb hoax online is as good as begging to be jailed. Obviously the authorities would want to trace him for that. If he is indeed guilty of the bomb hoax, then I hope that he does get punished harshly for that.
But for goodness' sake, is it so hard for people to secure their home wireless networks with a password or something? -
Personally, if you do not secure, and you want others to share your network, it should be your own ass on the line. The law should not penalise those people who access unsecured network, but instead those who hack into secured network.
Old school legal arguments do not work in a new environment where definitions of public spaces are everchanging. -

while it is stupid to leave the doors to your home open and unlocked, it does not mean it is alright to steal from that home.

Leaving your door open simply makes it easier for burglars to enter your home. Even if you lock it, the doors can be forced open.
Similarly, not having your wireless connection secured only makes it easier for people to "steal" your connection. Passwords can also be hacked. -

hw do u make ur network connection secure? After reading all of this cases im starting to think if ppl r tapping into my network..sumtimes so lagging..im using a linksys router...i followd the manual and the part where they ask to secure connection got a few options such as WEP,PES and dunno got others i dun understnd..i chose one of the options n they ask for dunno wad passphrase..anyone care to xplain? -
It was still ok if he just used the connection, but he used it to post a bomb hoax, that is a very dumb thing to do.
