Is it time to retire the Singapore Girl?
The 35-year-old icon has been instrumental in placing SIA on the world map, but some say her image may now be dated
By Nur Dianah Suhaimi
HER makeup is immaculate, her hair neatly coiffed and she is immediately identified by the figure-hugging kebaya she wears.
She also fronts many of the advertisements for Singapore's national carrier where she's often seen in exotic locations such as India and Africa greeting the natives with her warm smile or hugging and playing with children.
Born in 1972, the Singapore Girl has become almost synonymous with Singapore Airlines (SIA) itself and is indeed such an icon that she has earned a place in Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London.
The airline, in recognising the symbolic power she wields, calls her 'one of the airline industry's, and Singapore's, most prominent figures'.
But at 35 years old, is it time for her to retire gracefully?

SQ do have cabin crew from all over... if you did not realize. Every international flight has at least two foreign cabin crew from whichever country the flight is heading to. (i.e. If the flight is going to Korea, there are Korean steward/stewardess, flights going to India, there are Indian crews).Originally posted by Fatum:the thing is ... how many SIA girls are actually singaporeans right now ? ...
or even PR's ? ....
if singapore airlines ever wants to go into the big leagues, then it needs to to look beyond Singapore for air crew .... singapore is not going to produce enough girls to fill the SIA ranks, even with a population of 6 million ... and people wonder why standards are going down ? ...
SIA needs to repackage herself ... into something like cathay or virgin, or those arab airlines, where the cabin crew are from all over the place ...
I think what Fatum means is that the crew is from all over the place.Originally posted by Ningster:SQ do have cabin crew from all over... if you did not realize. If you are talking repackaging in terms of new poster girls, that is understandable. However, aren't we going back to the same complain that foreigners are taking away Singaporeans' jobs when we are the one who propose for cabin crews from all over?
yes, that's right ... if SIA is to go international, then it's time to shed the country-based image ...Originally posted by Ponders:I think what Fatum means is that the crew is from all over the place.
SIA's practice now is just to have crew from the country to where the plane is heading just for linguistic reasons.
Whereas the airilnes Fatum mention.. they really had an meltingpot of crews.
